I am prepping for a closing with some good friends of mine who I met while helping them buy this house they are now selling. Through the first transaction we became very good friends, and I consider them some of my favorite people. They've been there for awhile and decided to to sell this place and we got a nice offer with a lovely buyer. Negotiations were not a total breeze, but we worked through our issues. Most of them were due to miscommunication between the inspector and the buyer and her agent. The buyer and seller had a chance to meet when the buyer wanted to come by with a contractor, and that all was very smooth (again, doesn't hurt sometimes to have buyers and sellers meet).
Anyway, I usually remind sellers a few days before closing that the house is to be in "broom clean condition" as that's what the contract states. These sellers, my friends, not only "broom cleaned it" they had their amazing cleaning lady come by and do a thorough scrub down. And left a bottle of champagne in the fridge for the buyer to toast her success at buying her first home.
Folks, this is how you do it. I cannot tell you how many homes as a buyer's agent, I've walked through where they don't even bother to abide by the contract and sweep the place, much less pay for a special cleaning. Sometimes people get very wrapped up in their own needs during a real estate transaction. Hey, I get that too. It's hard, it's stressful. Sometimes you are just so exhausted from whatever it is that is causing you to move that you don't think of others much. But this nice gesture really touched me and made me think, I sure do wish all sellers had this attitude. Send some joy and good karma out there in the world and to your buyer.
I simply love it when sellers abide by the golden rule and treat others as they would want to be treated. I honestly wish that line were in the standard contract, or rather that it was just instinct for all sellers.
