Electric or Gas - Which Do You Prefer and Why?

gas burnerMany, many years ago when I first started selling real estate I had clients specifically ask me to search for gas stoves when looking for houses...I know the Hispanics love gas stoves (it has to do with the many fried foods they prepare, or so my Hispanic friend tells me), and I'm pretty sure the Asians prefer them also.  I cannot remember nationalities of others who requested gas.  But I can remember being told by many that they would not buy a house with built-ins that did not have a gas stove/oven.

electric stoveIt seems that since that time, preferences on this has changed.  I have had several requests lately to only see houses that are all electric (meaning the stove has to be electric also).   Our daughter and son-in-law were here this past weekend and he went to make breakfast for us on our gas stove (my preference - although we did not search for a house looking for only gas stoves).  Anyway, John went to make breakfast and did not like gas cooking - he had never used a gas stove before.  We had to get out the electric skillet to make him happy.

Is it a generational thing or what?  Why is electric now "in" and gas seems to be 'out'....or is it just a preference?  New homes are being built all electric...does this have something to do with the preferences?  Nobody seems to have a reason for their preference....just an 'I don't know, it's what I'm used to'.  Which do YOU prefer and why?

Side note: that person in the picture above with the electric burner better not put his/her hand any closer...a burnt hand they will have!  Cooking Dinner

I prefer a gas stove over electric anyday, especially where it gets really cold. What happens if your power goes out and the temperature is a brisk 20 degrees outside? How can you heat your home and stay warm? If you have a gas stove then you can simply turn it on and 5 minutes later, the heat from it can help keep a small area warm so you won't freeze to death.

Mary.  I posted about my preference for an all electric house on one of my Lovettsville series.

I love my heat pump.  I love my smooth top electric range.  What's left, the water heater.

My elec. bill is about $160 a month throughout the year.

My house cannot explode from a gas leak.

Nuff said.

Mary, my clients overwhelmingly prefer gas regardless of age.  They especially like cooking with gas.  I have them trying to figure out if gas is there when they see an electric range.

Mary - Great question, I have had both.  I love gas for a cooktop and electric for the oven.  Right now I have a gas cooktop and a built in gas oven.  It does not bake as evenly in my opinion.  Just my 2 cents worth.  (my mother will differ with me, she loves her gas oven.)

I grew up with electric and have had it my whole married life. WE bought a cottage a few years ago and it had gas and now I love gas. When we remodel our kitchen I am converting to gas.

Mary - I used to have a gas stove and burnt everything...my husband said it was probably just my cooking. I prefer electric because I can get the smooth cooktop. I'm with Lenn...an electric house doesn't explode. I'm just a little afraid of gas.

I have seen about half and half wanting gas vs electric.  Personally I just love electric and gas makes me nervous.  My mom is definitely a gas fan and it scares me everytime I hear that WHOOSE when the eye starts up!

Mary,

For no good reason, we pride ourselves on not having any 'fossil fuels' on our premises...We are all electric including our barbecue grille!!! Only my lawn mower uses gasoline and of course our cars!!! Thanks,   Fran

Mary- I grew up with Gas, lived in several homes with Electric and quickly went back to gas.  I would not have it any other way. In my opinion, gas is hotter and quicker and just enjoy cooking with it.

Hi Mary: I "used" to cook only with gas 'cause it seemed to be easier - however, it was not as clean 'cause I'd get that film on my cabinets, etc. Since moving back to Arizona, I've again become accustomed to using electric. I like it - especially since I can use a smooth top. I think it's just whatever we're used to using. That said, I suppose I'd be okay with a Wolfe range all gas. ;-)  We use our bbque most every evening.........it's so nice out. Today in the high 70's and tomorrow up to 80. Yes, our warmer weather is finally here.

Mary, as an investor I prefer electric. To often a tenant will let the gas get cut off. If it goes unchecked, the property owner could face a large expense to pass local inspection for a return of gas service. My personal home is all electric.

I love gas because when you turn it off it is off - but it is not available where I live -

My wife likes Gas and my mom likes electric. Since my 85 year young mother lives with us, we have a separate kitchen for her with electric.

Most of our clients that love to cook have typically looked for a gas range.  As the cook of our house, I wouldn't cook with anything other than gas.
