Well, That Changes Everything

A few years ago, my son’s church drama team was gearing up for the annual Fine Arts Festival competition, and it was announced that the theme was: “That Changes Everything”.  They could create any type of skit, video, song, poem, soliloquy, whatever it was, as long as the overriding focus was clearly “That Changes Everything”.

Two weeks ago, my friend of 23 years went to visit the doctor, and came out with a diagnosis of stage 3c ovarian cancer. Talk about that changing everything. (She just had surgery and is on the road to a successful recovery... hooray!)

It doesn’t always have to be challenging news or even good news at a doctor’s office that can re-route your life; it can be a much smaller everyday event that can change little things in an unexpected way.

I was in Home Depot this past weekend and they had an amazing sale on wrought iron motion chairs. What changed everything for me was a small tag with a big American flag, stating that each chair had been made in the USA. That made a huge difference, and the other chairs I’d been considering immediately fell out of the running.USA Chair by Barb Fischer San Diego La Mesa

Another Home Depot incident was the search for an elusive custom-order rug that another customer had snatched up first.  Chris at the El Cajon store did an extensive search and found another one for me. His over-the-top customer service changed everything, so I purchased it from his store--- even though it has a 1% higher sales tax than the Santee store right up the street.

Being an avid dog and cat rescuer (yep, 4 dogs and 4 cats now), I was reflecting on how each of these special creatures came into my life. It’s always been their personal story which changed everything for me, and compelled me to adopt them. Curly and Moe looked like average cats from their photo, until their sad story of abandonment and imminent euthanasia was revealed. Romeo’s family left him behind when a new baby was born. Buffy’s guy had to move to a place where dogs weren’t welcome. Holly was left to starve in a hotel room in Temecula, and her sister did die. She came to us weighing 39 pounds… near death for a Lab. We’ve fattened her up nicely, and instead of fretting about her next meal, all she focusses on now is finding someone to play fetch with her, over and over and over again.

I’m wondering, what has changed everything in your life recently?

Have a happy rest of summer!

P.S. If you’re curious, here is an eye-opening CA sales tax chart. When you’re making a larger purchase, a 1% variance can make a big difference
