WHOOO WOULD HAVE KNOWN

The owl has made a very popular comeback these days.  From notepads to kitchen aprons, owls have made a major impact on both the fashion and the interior decorating world.  These nocturnal animals have often appeared in horror mystery films and have graced our Halloween décor each fall.  What is it about these cute, feathery creatures of the night that draw us to them?

Owls have distinct eyes.  They are  large, wide-set, and for some reason we feel this gives owls a wise appearance.  Because their eyes are fixed in their sockets, the owl is able to turn their head 270 degrees (about ¾ of the way around without moving its shoulders).  Contrary to popular myth, owls are not able to turn their heads in a complete circle

These intelligent looking creatures are found in all regions of the Earth except Antarctica.  There are over 220 different owl species and many of them live in our very own backyard.  We have around 15 species of owl in the California area including the Great Horned Owl, the Western Screech Owl and even the tiny Elf Owl.

Owls in the Walnut Creek area and other neighborhoods are very helpful in controlling the population of mice, voles, moles, rats, skunks, snakes, insects and slugs to name a few. This Halloween, put together an owl trivia sheet for your party guests, and don’t forget to add a friendly, wise owl to your decor.

GOOD MORNING RENEE ... now that you mention it - I have seen the owl a lot - on clothing especially!  We have a couple owls that perch on our roof - they are scary if they buzz by ya but are actually cute when they are just sitting and watching!
