Door County Update:  Sister Bay, WI Road Construction and downtown Village Improvements commence.  Sister Bay is still open for business!

Sister Bay DetourFor the past five years, northern Door County (Sister Bay and Liberty Grove) has prepared for Department of Transportation road improvements to the Village of Sister Bay, Wisconsin.

These improvements will include improvements to the (steep) Sister Bay hill on Highway 42/57, storm water (sewer/gutter) improvements, sidewalks up the hill on the westerly side past St. Rosalia's Church, new street lights downtown, and many other changes to improve and enhance the Village's appeal and quality of life for residents and visitors.

However, an offshoot of these improvements are, of course, the construction process itself.  It is time consuming, noisy, messy, and will cause delays and difficulty getting into some Village businesses.

Be sure to persevere, because this is still the best time of the year to visit!  Traffic is low, the snow has not yet arrived, and all Towns and Villages are in preparation for the upcoming holiday season.

The downtown Sister Bay businesses that are open through the winter are alive and well, and welcoming people daily with new parking options.  These businesses include Al Johnson's Swedish Restaurant, Husby's Food & Spirits, The Sister Bay Bowl, On Deck, Cupcake Heaven and Spot, among others.

If you are planning to visit Sister Bay through the holidays, the current detour allows northbound traffic to go down the Sister Bay Highway 42/57 hill, and then traffic is one-way, north-bound.  If you are coming south through Sister Bay, the detour starts at Scandia Road by the Sister Bay marina, veers south on Woodcrest, and then you will have the option of several exits to Highway 57, from Orchard Drive, to Plateau Road, to Old Stage Road.

Sister Bay is still in full preparation for its annual Capture the Spirit celebration Thanksgiving weekend, with a tree lighting, sales, a craft fair, trolley rides and more.  For more information on this year's Capture the Spirit celebration in Sister Bay, WI, check here.

Construction is expected to continue through 2014 into the final DOT phase in 2015.  In two short years, downtown Sister Bay, one of the most popular destinations in Door County, will have a whole new look.
