Grand Parkway (99) Extension from Interstate I-10 to US 290 is Open
The State Highway 99 or Grand Parkway extension from I-10 ( Katy) to US 290 ( Cypress) opened on December 21, 2013. The cool part is there will be NO TOLLS charged until February 1, 2014. Highway 99 from 1-10 to FM 1093 will remain a toll free zone as it has been for many years. The segment from FM 1093 to Sugar Land will be a toll road and I am uncertain when this section will be opened for business. I will check it on Monday as I have to drive to Houston Association of Realtors in Greatwood on Monday so I can add the functionality of a SUPRA key to my 5C IPhone.
I have used this new extension several times recently to driver from my home to my CPA client office located in North Houston. So far so good but the traffic on US 290 has been very light due to the holidays. I was able to drive approximately 32 miles in about 32 minutes which is unheard of in the Houston area.
Based on what I found on one of the web sites the toll charges for now with no guarantees of course are set at 17.7 cents per mile. This will equate to about $3.60 one way to go from I-10 to US 290. I personally can see using this means to go home in the evening but US 290 is always a traffic disaster any time during rush hour.
This new extension could be problematic for me as now it is easier for my wife to drive from our home to the Cypress Premium Outlets - Cypress as this major Outlet Shopping mall is just south of the intersection of US 290 and the 99 extension!
