Cotopaxi Colorado, named after a volcano in Ecuador, is the best of the wild wild west. This is a live link and updates daily as new homes come on the market.
We have a 37 acre mini ranch in Cotopaxi and love the people and the terrain. Cotopaxi is generally more rugged than Salida, Howard or Coaldale and is speckled with red rocks, cliffs, cactus at the lower elevations, and Cholla (we call it jumping cholla because it appears to fly off the plant and stick on your clothes, hands, and pets). At higher elevations, you can see towering pines and aspens. The elevation at the store is about 6000 ft, 1000 feet lower than Salida and Salida is our banana belt. The snow melts faster here and often it is t-shirt weather in the winter.
The town of Cotopaxi consists of 48 people and has the Cotopaxi store, a third generation business, Big Horn Liquor, the Cotopaxi Church, a post office and Pleasant Valley Health Center. The greater area of Cotopaxi, including Texas Creek and Glen Vista, is 1753, about 5 people per square mile. The outskirts of the area are wild, remote and hard to get to. If you don't want to be found, that is the spot.
Cotopaxi has farmer's markets on Saturday at the Cotopaxi Church. They also share their wares at the Coaldale Market. The area is home to a variety of folks, artists, gardeners, folks who want vacation homes in the wild wild west, and, in fact, folks who want to be completely off the grid.
The Cotopaxi Store is amazing... our local supermall. They have just a bit of everything.. hardward, food, local music, homemade saugage (made by Ann, the owner), a deli/restaurant, gas station, propane, and store. Folks either head to Salida Colorado or Cañon City, depending on what they need. Stop by on Thursday nights from 5-6:30 with your fiddle and sing along with Ann and friends.
Salida's Down Valley is our facebook site that the community runs. It has Cotopaxi, Coaldale and Howard members who share their wares and events and photos.
