Ghost Bike in Calimesa CA....Experienced Bicyclist Lost His Life

A ghost bike or ghost cycle is a bicycle set up as a roadside memorial in a place where a bicyclist has been killed or severely injured and usually by a motor vehicle. Besides being a memorial for the cyclist, it is a reminder for all who pass by to remember to share the road.

On December 29, 2013, a 64 year old bicyclist, Phil was riding on Calimesa Blvd, when a driver of a green vehicle crossed over the road and hit him head on at approximately 50 miles per hour. The driver left the scene and the Riverside Sheriff’s Department found him lying in the road severely injured. Phil did not die at the scene but recently died to his injuries on January 12, 2014. Phil was an experienced rider and belonged to several bike clubs.

After several traffic stops in the area and a great investigation by many officers, they were able to locate the vehicle and arrest the hit and run driver. Leads from other drivers and citizens in the area help to locate suspects when crimes like this occur.

Ghost bikes are usually old bikes that have been painted white. Usually there is a name placed on the bike or in front of it.

This  memorial site also has a bike wheel and Phil’s water bottle. His mangled bike has been removed from the scene and will be used as evidence for the trial later.

Redlands, CA has bike lanes clearly marked has recently instituted an ordinance that drivers must slow down and stay at least 3 feet from bicyclists on the road. Many other cities are in the planning stages too to protect bike riders.

Be careful when driving a motor vehicle and watch out for bicyclists and pedestrians crossing the road. Many times, young children dart out into the street so drivers must drive defensively. And remember, if you see something or hear a rumor, report it to the police in your area as it might help the investigation.

If you want to read about ghost bikes, there is a Facebook page called “Ghost Bikes-LA” with many photos of ghost bikes.

A ghost bike is a great idea for a roadside memorial and a reminder for all drivers to be careful.

So sad...that is not something they do out here.  Usually it is a very large mound of flowers and ribbons that is continually replenished sometimes for years at a time.

Hi Roy,

Yes it is a good idea for drivers to remind themselves to drive carefully and defensively. There has been a lot of bike deaths in Southern California in the past year. Very sad.

Hi Debra,

Yes it is such a shame and such a waste of someone's life. It is hard when anyone dies, but small kids is the hardest. All the hit and runs show that many drivers have no respect for others or respect of the road.
