A Guide to Hipster Neighborhoods in Music City

If you think Music City is all ten-gallon hats and cowboy boots, honky-tonks on Broadway, and country stars wandering the shopping centers, you might want to take a second look. Sure, Nashville might have a little of all that, but the city is so much more. In fact, vibrant culture and hip hotspots lurk around absolutely every corner. So, where should you go if you’re looking for Nashville’s trendiest locales? Here’s a rundown of the hippest neighborhoods:

East Nashville

East Nashville

Probably the granddaddy of all Nashville’s hipster neighborhoods, East Nashville is also the largest. Covering three zip codes—37206, 37216, and 37207—East Nashville is home to locally owned boutiques, coffee shops, and restaurants you can’t find anywhere else. We’re talking award winning, here.

Barista Parlor, filled with reclaimed wood furniture and, more importantly, some of the best coffee you’ll find in the city, is located in the heart of East Nashville. The Pharmacy Burger Parlor and Beer Garden serves some of the best burgers you’ll ever taste, and the menu features a pretty extensive craft beer selection. No. 308, a cocktail lover’s dream, serves up mixologist-approved drinks and even house-made sodas. When it comes to food and drink, we’re only scratching the surface.

Local clothing and furniture stores also call East Nashville home, like Goodbuy Girls and Hello Boys, where you can find vintage and contemporary styles. Old Made Good goes a step further with vintage only fashions. Alegria Gifts always has the accessories you love, and The Groove features all vinyl, all the time.

Hillsboro Village

Hillsboro Village

With its location near Nashville’s universities, it’s no wonder Hillsboro Village is the home of Music City’s trendiest eateries and shops. Vanderbilt, Belmont, and Lipscomb are all close by, and students from around the country flock to the bars and boutiques on 21st Avenue. You’ll find Bosco’s, a microbrewery with a menu filled with delicious American fare; Jackson’s, with its famous brunches during the weekend; and the world-famous Pancake Pantry.

If you want the trendiest gifts and clothes, you can visit Posh, a boutique with high-end designer clothing; SEE, an eyeglass and sunglass specialty store; Pangea, filled with artistic clothing, gifts, and bath products; and Bookman/Bookwoman for vintage and rare books.

Finally, no hipster neighborhood is complete without an art house theater. The Belcourt Theatre shows classic, indie, and foreign films every day. Even better? You can enjoy a beer.

12South

12 SOUTH

Another Wonderland of hipster culture exists just a few blocks away from Hillsboro Village at 12South. The same college crowd also finds its way to the restaurants and bars here, but you’ll also see several young professionals in the mix. If you want coffee, Frothy Monkey is the place to go. You can also get a grower of beer filled at The Filling Station. If food is what you crave, Burger Up serves some delicious craft burgers, Taqueria del Sol features Mexian fare, and Edley’s Bar-B-Que has some of the best pulled pork in the city.

Don’t forget to wander the shops, like Katy K’s Ranch Dressing, MODA Boutique, Savant Vintage, and Imogene + Willie. You could shop all day and still not see everything.

If you’re not convinced that Nashville has a thriving hipster culture, then perhaps it’s time to visit. You can see all the trendy hotspots at night and search for your new Nashville home during the day.
