Bank of America Screw Up Leaves American Student Stranded in Austria!

As many of you know, my daughter is studying abroad in Austria. She is traveling with a limited amount of cash. We got her a BankAmericard Travel Rewards card for her trip. European countries require a chip in the card and that's why we got the card to begin with.

Today she attempted to use the card for the very first time in Austria. It was accepted at one merchant but when she went to use it later at another merchant, she was asked to supply a PIN number. We had never been told the card required a PIN number.

I contacted Bank of America on Monday with her international locations and was never advised by the Customer Service rep that a PIN number would be required. I must have asked 3 times if anything else would be required and was advised she was ready to use the card internationally.

I accessed my online banking site to see if there was anywhere for me to set up a PIN number. I had to request one. Unfortunately, they said it would take 5 - 10 days for me to receive the PIN. That isn't going to work. My daughter doesn't have enough cash funds for that long.

I contacted Bank of America and was told there wasn't anything that could be done. That as a security feature a PIN is mailed. There was no way for them to email it to me, even though, I have paperless communication on my account. There was no way to edit the information to issue a new number or for me to create a PIN through my on-line account features.

I don't know what I was thinking when I used Bank of America. I know so many people who have had difficulty with home loans and short sales. Once again, Bank of America screw up leaves American student stranded in Austria.

Bank of America customer service sucks. It didn't even matter to them that I'm going to close their account.

I have already contacted Citicard and requested a card in my daughter's name with a PIN number. I suspect I'll have that before I even receive the stupid BOA pin.

I will never use BOA again and I will warn other people against using them as well.
