When is enough enough? Electrical issues that should not be.

It only took 109 years for this home to get to this point.

This home was built in 1905, started out with Knob and Tube wiring and then "Upgraded" to fiber coated lines then finally the standard Romex style was installed.

But major issues remain. It seems that each and every time the home's electrical had been worked on, the electricians never removed from service the older electrical components.

Take a look at the way this homes electrical was a "Nightmare to inspect".

The incoming service was correct. But then it went from good to bad to really bad.

Heading down the stairwell to the basement. Here is what I found. WOW.

Electrical panels.

Here is Five panels and boxes to inspect in the stairwell alone.

Note the lines that come out of the center main breaker panel.

When I saw this mess, all I could think of was "Oh No".

This was justified when I got to the basement and found the second round of breaker and fuse panels.

Panels in basement

There is another four panels in the basement. Notice the lines for the main panel in the stair well?

These lines come into the FPE panels through cut off conduit. No wire protection.

This home should have been upgraded a very long time ago. Instead of just adding more and more panels to the home. The electricians did not give the proper advice when the need for more electrical work on the home.

This is why you always get a "Full Home Inspection" by a certified inspector. For the peace of mind.

After losing a house to fire once in my life, and believeing it was probably because a mouse chewed through an old wire, electrical issues scare me!

I don't claim to know nothing about electrical stuff other than to stay away from it.  Having said that even I could see something was really wrong here.

Hi Lenn,

I have found this is the case a lot of times. But in this area it seems that crappy electrical work is a norm.

Have a good Sunday in Virginia.

Hello Donald.

Not a good location for all that crap installed over the years.

Then they added all the panels in the basement too.

Time to add a 200 amp main panel. After removing all the old panels.

Have a great weekend in the West Coast.

Hi Joan,

I did just that. But advised them to get a licensed electrician to evaluate the system and advise them the best route to go for this mess.

Have a great day in Denver.

 Hi Kathy,

Yes I do see a lot of bad situations for the buyers and the sellers. Many of these issues can be taken care of but at a cost.

Have a great day in Delray Beach.

Hi Marte,

Loosing a home to a fire is really bad. Mice can cause all kinds of trouble. Having a good protected electrical system is the best way to go.

Have a good day and thanks for the comment.

Hi James,

Unless you are trained as a electrician, never attempt to make fixes yourself.

Always use a licensed electrician. And get a warranty with the work done.

Have a great day in Rogers my friend.
