Step Out of Your Comfort Zone, Way Out!
After being in the real estate business for a few years I was asked to teach in real estate pre-license school. I immediately got the jitters at the thought and wanted to say no right off the bat. Instead I said give me a couple of days to think about it.
So for about three days I was almost sick to my stomach thinking I can't get up in front of adults and teach real estate. Previously before real estate I had taught young children but teaching adults was an entirely different scenario. These adults would be paying out of their pockets to learn a new field and launch a new career. Was I equipped and up to the task?
Every bone in my body wanted to say no but I said yes. Why? Because I needed to do it for me. I was so afraid to do it that I simply knew I had to do it for my personal growth and success. I realized if I said no I would be going backward in my career path and I had every intention to go forward. I had to step out of my comfort zone, way out.
I studied hard and mastered the material. I researched adult learning styles and found out that children are a lot easier to engage than adults. I was determined to master it and by doing so my fear gradually subsided. Every time I taught a class I felt stronger and less nervous. I even started looking forward to it and wasn't sick to my stomach anymore.
In fact word spread and I was asked to teach in several real estate schools and actually got hired to be the company trainer for Coldwell Banker. I developed training programs for new agents and continued teaching in real estate pre-licensing classes at the community college. Many times I was awarded the teacher of the quarter award.
So how did this help in my success in real estate? It taught me that I had the courage to do whatever I wanted to do if I would just step out of my comfort zone. I got my broker's license and even ran my own company for 10 years. I have run a property management department, been a sales manager, marketing director, builder and developer. I have been a successful real estate broker.
What do I like doing best? I love selling real estate but all those other steps along the way have added to my knowledge and helped me grow and be a better agent.
What's It Take to be a Successful Agent These Days? It takes the same thing that it did 30 years ago. You have to continue to grow, try new things and not be afraid of failure. Failures teach us valuable lessons and make us want to succeed even more the next time. If you are not growing you are going backwards. Whether it is making those calls you don't want to make, door knocking, asking for the business or competing for a new block of business, you have to be moving forward and growing and pushing yourself. Step Out of Your Comfort Zone, Way Out!
