It Is Not My Fault... I Swear...

I had one of my site hacked, and had to “kill” it along with the associated email. Even after its "death", huge number of spam was still coming from now a dead site and email, and the IT people were scratching their heads trying to figure how this could be happening…

So, I figured that it would be prudent to go back to my AR blog posts and change some links, that are now broken.

I started with Bella Vista Condos in daytona Beach Shores. I typed “Bella Vista Daytona” in the search field of AR, and it pulled all my blog posts tagged “Bella Vista”. We used to have an easier way to do it at the time before fixing what ain't broke, but who said that upgrades should make our lives easier, or, at least, not make it worse?

Anyway, I methodically went to each blog and changed the links. I was proud with myself, though understanding, that with 2,105 blog posts, it was mission impossible and without that celebrity actor I would unlikely ever complete this mission...

When I looked at my Home page after that, I was surprised to see quite a few comments… to my very old posts, some dating to 2009… and I was stunned to see that these were the very posts that I have just edited. I went to check, and yes, they were shown as posted today. A whole bunch of them.

No, I did not change the status to “draft”, so I did not cause it. I simply edited them. But somehow they became “fresh”.

I thought about over 2,000 points for that rush of new posts, but no, points were withheld :) Actually, I lost some points, I noticed it later, that the number was less, but I did not pay much attention and do not know how many points I lost. I read before that if you go to your old posts, you lose points, I thought it had been fixed long ago, but, seems, this is not the case.

I do not know if this is me, or it happens to everyone (I suspect the latter is true) and this is simply the glitch, but hey, guys, I did not do anything wrong.

I do not have the writer’s block.

Sorry for all the problems Jon, sure would be nice if the authorities would spend a lot more effort on finding and eliminating hackers.  The collecive damage that these people cause is immense.

Jon, I suspected yesterday you were in massive edit mode when the old blog posts showed up on the blog roll.  I had a similar issue with date stamps a few months ago when I changed all our IDX search links in our posts.  The time stamp at the top still showed the original date, but the date on My Traffic updated.

Hope they fix this problem, Jon.  Bad enough that you had to go through this exercise without being penalized for it.

What a mess. I didn't know you lost points if you edited old posts.

Don't edit old posts is the lesson from a couple of years ago.  You simply do not know what will happen.

I usually get ZERO "0" points for many of my local posts.  Kerrie said it was because I was using duplicate content.  Nonsense.  It was the footer that I used on about 1000 posts.

Now what???

I don't even think about it anymore.  I just post and forget.

Such a pain in the backside. One of my email accounts was hacked last week. They even sent an email out that stated "Apprasial attached. Please review and get back to me." (there was some other stuff and the grammar was questionable.)

I sent a mass email from another account warning people about the hack on my other account, but....

The number of people who tried to open it absolutely amazed me! Agents I didn't have anything working with were calling me and saying it wouldn't open! People who had sold their houses years ago or bought years ago! Seriously people? If you aren't expecting it, DON'T open it!

Liz & Bill - yes, I was in massive "edit" mode. I find it funny, as broken links on AR do not do AR any good, at least, this is what I thought, and I thought that it is in my interest and in the interest of AR that we fix the broken links when we change IDX or websites.

Gabe - I am afraid this is one of those pesky problems, which is the result of AR "fixing what ain't broke" (I am quoting Karen Ane Stone old blog post).

We are now in a situation where AR "fixes" one thing that we do not see (for SEO) and breaks two, that we see, like in this case. I have a long list of things poorly working or not working, which used to work perfectly before. But AR might not want to see it

Jill - I believe there was a discussion a year ago, or, maybe, even two. I thought that it had been resolved, but I might be overly optimistic

Thanks, Mark. Statistically, it turns out it is easier to become very active by editing (LOL)

Lenn - my idea behind it was to make links from authoritative Active Rain/Trulia to my personal and un-athouritative website. Plus, I did not like the idea of people reading old blogs, which they still find on the internet, and deal with broken links, so I figured I would try to do it with the most prestigious condos at least.

The rest was pure fun :)

HI Jon - I didn't realize those were old posts, so I was quite impressed at your industriousness yesterday - it looked like you were intent on making up for lost time. Thanks for the heads up on the editing problem.

Than - you are so right. But I must admit that so often I am tempted to open a link, and then stop myself with your question. In some instances, I would send the agent an email asking to confirm whether they sent me an email, and every time the answer was "no".

You were nice trying to warn people, many don't do anything, and when you write to them, they would acknowledge that their email was hacked. So inconsiderate...

I edited a few of my old posts Jon. The date on the posts stayed the same but on my stats page it was updated to the current one. I do hope AR will get around to fixing it soon.

I noticed all your posts yesterday and figured you were on a roll

Dick - and it was not easy to figure it out. I wouldn't have done it on purpose, but it just how AR marked them, and they started coming, and coming, and coming... :)

Andrea - I will call AR tomorrow and talk to them. I am a bit surprised that they seem not to have a tester. Someone who reads and blogs, and who can tell them about the problems. They could have created a group for this particular purpose, and people would be reporting problems and inconveniences.

It seems so logical, that I can't figure why they would not do it.

Jon, Actually to a certain extent I suspect we as Ambassadors kind of the test group.  I know I spend some time getting in glitches to the AR Staff as I find them.

Liz - I called AR relatively recently, and complained on a bug. A young lady (anyone younger than me is now a young person) listened to me and did not hear me.

She was telling me how it would have been possible to circumvent a problem. I was trying to tell her, that the problem was created by them, so why teach us how to circumvent it instead of not creating?

But again, she listened to me, but she did not hear me
