Those Awkward Moments #1- Trip to the hospital

Those Awkward Moments #1- Trip to the hospital

I've surely had a number of awkward moments over the course of my 13 years in the real estate/property management business.  While I realize I'll only be gettin' points for one of these, I had a hard time choosing between my top 3 awkward moments- so I'll write about each of them.

Awkward Moment #1 is a no-brainer.  This awkward moment came about while I was showing a condo back in '05/'06 or so.  My pre-screening of the prospect was normal- this was a single professional lady looking to rent a 2/2 condo in the $1,000/mo range. Income was good, credit great, she loved what she'd seen in my ad for a certain condo, and we set a time to meet up at the place so she could take a quick look at it.

As we went through the front door, I pointed out the kitchen on the right and a dining area to the left.  The dining area had a nice double-hung window similar to the one above (less the message, of course).  I never would've imagined what happened next...

The lady went over to the window and said "Let's check out this window" (or something to that effect), unlocked the window and lifted the lower pane to open it.

Bam! With an audible thud reminiscent of a baseball bat hitting a ball, the lower pane fell open and hit her right across the bridge of her nose.

The lady had a pretty good cut on a part of the body where even the slightest nick will bleed- and she took a lick that was hard enough to send blood spraying a few feet away.

Needless to say, I was stunned. Never before that incident had anyone opened a window like that in the middle of a showing (and it hasn't happened since), yet here was a lady standing there covering her nose in pain and giving me one of those unmistakable "Aren't you gonna do something?" looks.

I didn't have anything at all that I could use to help her, either. The condo was absolutely empty, I was carrying just a few sheets of paper about the listing and nothing else- and in the perfect storm of all storms, I'd just cleaned out my car the night before and didn't even have a napkin I could give her.

After another minute or so that seemed like an eternity passed by, the lady said "I think I need to go to the hospital". Despite having no prior medical training or any recent time in a Holiday Inn Express, I agreed with her and told her that that was probably a good idea.

Hi, Laura:  Thank you for stopping by, and for your comment.  Yep- if I had a quarter for every time I've heard "You oughtta write a book", I'd be rich enough that I wouldn't have to worry about being bothered with writing a book:).

Have a great Sunday!

So many clients do try the windows and the doors. I always have a golf towel in the trunk, maybe I should bring it in with me from now on.

Hi, Ed:  Thank you for dropping by, and for your comment.  It seems like I can never be as prepared as I need to be- there's always a prospect asking for a tape measure, etc- and I don't typically carry a took kit around with me!
