BILINGUAL (ENGLISH/SPANISH) BUSINESS

By
Real Estate Agent with One Sothebys International Realty
There is no question that being bilingual in this market (Southeast Florida) is a hugh advantage.  I find that I speak Spanish in the office & with customers probably 50% or more of the time--a remarkable percentage outside of Miami!  Still, I have to watch myself.  I find that I become lazy.  When speaking with other bilingual agents, I tend to speak some version of 'spanglish', sequeing between Spanish & English in the same conversation with equal ease.  Yet, when speaking with folks who aren't bilingual, I'm comfortable speaking in either Spanish or English.  I can't even understand why I do that.  In the past, I always considered speaking both languages at once as a flaw, someone who didn't know either language well enough had to use two languages simultaneously to communicate.  Now, I'm the one doing it.   But it stops today...I resolve to speak either Spanish or English, but not both in the same sentence or conversation!

It's funny because I always hear that my Spanish skills are an asset however it doesn't seem to bring me that much more business.  Here in AZ it brings me a lot of leads that don't qualify :(
