Noted as the premier outdoor swimming event for the Pacific Northwest the Long Bridge swim has grown from 68 swimmers in 1995 to over 750 in 2013. Well over 6,500 swimmers have participated over the 19 year span since the events inception.
An ideal event for participants as well as spectators. The route runs parallel to the Sandpoint Longbridge which has the foot bridge for pedestrians as well, then turning to the bike/walking path to the finish, cheering fans may follow a family member or friend from start to finish.
The 1.76 mile swim across Lake Pend Oreille has been completed by a wide variety of swimmers. Ages from 7 to 86 have completed the swim over the years. With the numbers now involved the organizers are proud of their safety record and work hard to maintain the safety of swimmers, volunteers and spectators. The Long Bridge Swim uses sponsorships to underwrite the operating costs for the Swim so that participant registration fees and donations can be used to fund the promotion and delivery of swimming lessons to north Idaho youth and adults who do not know how to swim. Working closely with the Lake Pend Oreille School District, City of Sandpoint Parks and Recreation Department and Sandpoint West Athletic Club, our goals are to help non-swimmers learn to swim, teach water safety, eliminate needless drownings and promote swimming as a life sport.
Another North Idaho event with proceeds being used to benefit directly the local communities. Come enjoy the swim or enjoy viewing this unique event from the Long Bridge. After its completion you will be but a short walk from Downtown Sandpoint shops and restuarants.
