Loose Dogs -- Possibly Diseased... What do I do?

By
Real Estate Agent with Realty Executives Associates

sick dogI have a house listed and the next door neighbor has 3 dogs.  One stays on the porch like a dog should.

There are two others that do not.  The first time I went to the house, I got out of the van and the two of them walked steadily towards me barking the whole time.  So I did the only thing I could and I backed right into my van and sat there.

Lucky for me the buyers weren't afraid and the man shewed them away and I was able to show the house.

Now one of the dogs looks like it has the mange.  Is that the right word?  He looks sick.

I had an agent call me this weekend to let me know that sick dog Attack!jumped on her during a showing.  I would be terrified!!

What can I do?  I can't get to that neighbors door to let them know of this problem their dogs are causing, so what can I do?  Any advise will be gratefully appreciated.

Have a Fabulous Real Estate Day!

I would call animal control.  It will be your ___ on the line when they bite someone.

Anona, when I was showing a house one time, (Luckily I was with a policeman who wasn't afraid at all) A dog came out from nowhere and ran towards us teethe showing, and I froze in my space, scared of course, the guy I was with had no fear and got him( the dog) to leave us alone.  I would have been bit, I feel sure because that dog KNEW I was scared!

call the local SPCA and tell them the dogs are running loose - assuming you have a leash law - and hopefully they will pick them up.

Call the cops and the spca - you will get attention from both as dogs if dangerous may be considered an issue by the police as well!  Good luck!  A little steak may go a long way as well (sorry, had to say it)...

I'm an annimal lover, but dogs running loose are quite a problem.  I've lost sales on particular homes because of this.  Call animal control.  If this doesn't work, file a comlaint with annimal control and code enforcement, and have the seller do likewise.  One trick that I learned from a mailman and it has worked for me, is that if you're approached by a dog that looks mean, stop, but do not show fear.  If he comes up close to you, extend a hand slowly out toward the dog, with the back side (not palm) facing him.  He may want to sniff your hand, let him do it, but I've never been bitten by a dog using this method.  Now if the dog comes charging at you, get the heck out of there.

Call the animal control and buy some bear mace spray and don't be afraid to use it.  I use Streetwise.  You can find it at this PLACE

I agree with the others here who said that animal control should be called in. I, too, love animals, especially dogs - but a sick dog needs medical treatment rather than being left to possibly hurt someone. What if the dogs have rabies??

I agree with most of the others that animal control should be notified.

Yep, animal control. I recently wrote a series on Dog Bite Prevention you may want to check out. Although you could use the tips to protect yourself, you cannot protect other people or children that view the property.

Thanks everyone for your comments!  I have called animal control and kept the notes of the conversation in the file.

What if animal control doesn't take the dogs?  What if something happens now that I have done what I could?  Is my *!@#* still on the line?

Animal control sounds like the best bet if they are a bother or talk to the neighbor.

Sounds to me like animal control should be talking to the dog's owners. There are rules and regs. They could at least verify that the dogs had their shots and if not there is the reason to pick them up.

Good Luck and Later in the rain~Deb

Anona, I don't know if you solved this problem yet, but I would write a letter to the home owners or call animal control. We as responsible dog owners are supose to keep your pets in our yards!

Let us know how it turns out.

According to my last conversation to the individual from animal control, he will speak with the owners to make sure they are "tied down".

He also said the one dog wasn't sick, just too skinny.

I haven't been back to the property since the phone call, but am expected to head  over there in the next week.

Wish me luck!

Hate to hear they they are going to tie the dogs up.  Here it is illegal to tie dogs.  They need to be fenced or in a dog run.  Glad to hear the one dog is not ill.  Hoping that the dog owners are proactive in taking control of their dogs and that you will be able to sell your listing!
