So Many Places To Walk
& Things To Do & See
In Beautiful Charleston
Janis and I started a tradition a few years ago whereby we would take one or more of our 14 Grandchildren from one or more of our 5 fantastic Children on a Historic Trip somewhere in America when they started to study US History. For this we have never been disappointed.
On our most recent trip we were to take our 9 year old Granddaughter, Jewel Arendsen, daughter of my oldest son and daughter-in-law, Chad and Amber. to Charleston.
However, on the eve of our departure while in our hotel room I became very ill with a flu and had to cancel. Thank goodness the airlines were so understanding and allowed me to re-book my flight while Janis and Jewel, Chad and his oldest son Jarrek pressed on.
When Janis returned she told me that we had to re-book that trip because of all the trips, 2 times to Boston, 4 trips to New York, DC, Savannah, Philly and many more, Charleston was one of her favorites and she insisted I not miss it.
So here we are on day 4 of this wonderful journey albeit short of any Grand Children but loving every moment and mile we walk. Our mission statement on any/all journies we've ever embarked on is to WALK, WALK & WALK.
We rarely rent vehicles, pay for taxis or ride public transportation if we can walk instead. But I must say that Charleston is one of the most walk friendly City's we've ever had the pleasure of walking.
So far we've averaged 6 miles a day with our longest being 8 miles just yesterday. We love walking the docks of the many waterfront marinas and the boardwalks that border the city.
At one point on this particular 8 mile journey after stopping on one of the beautiful rooftop restaurants for a little rest and relaxation and to embrace the beautiful views Charleston so generously offers we were tempted to hire a Pedicab (rickshaw like bicycle with carriage) but soon abandoned the notion once getting our second breath.
However, our journey was once again to be short lived as Janis realized that it was Sunday afternoon and her favorite football team, The Saints, or better put her favorite quarterback, Drew Breeze was playing.
So we were off to the closest Sports Bar where Janis sadly sat and watched the Saints lose their season opener in overtime by a field goal to the Falcons.
However, all was not a loss as she soon realized she had developed another crush on opposing QB, Atlanta's own... Matt Ryan.
Could there be an Atlanta vs Super Bowl this year? Hmm.
All in all, however, this had to be one of the best days of our journey thus far and it's only half way over. We still have 3 1/2 beautiful and unpredictable days lying ahead as we also never plan more than one day ahead. We love spontaneity and generally never really book anything until we've had a chance to get a feel for the mood and the fervor in the area.
So what lies ahead for today? Well, when the pouring rain and the light show dies down a little we'll be walking into town for a ferry ride to Fort Sumter weather permitting. Thanks for indulging us on our journey. But just consider the Active Rain platform as our own personal daily journal. Have a great day!
