Tree Removal Permits in Gaithersburg

Many residents of the City of Gaithersburg are focusing on their lawns, gardens and trees at this time of the year. The severe winter weather created an unusually high level of damage to trees and shrubbery. You may wish to remove or replace some trees that are damaged or that now pose a risk during the hurricane season.

Please be aware of the requirement to obtain a permit to remove trees within the City of Gaithersburg.

This is the Tree Removal notice from the City:

To protect and preserve our urban tree canopy, the City of Gaithersburg requires residents to obtain a permit to remove, top or relocate a tree whose trunk is more than 2 inches in diameter when measured 4 inches up from the ground. Once the permit is received, a laminated sign will be provided to be staked on the property, so neighbors will know that permission has been granted. If you are concerned about trees being removed from private property without City permission, please contact the City's Neighborhood Services Division atneighborhoods@gaithersburgmd.gov or call 301-258-6340 during regular business hours. Read more here.

For out of the area readers, the City of Gaithersburg is located in the heart of Montgomery County, Maryland in the western suburbs of Washington, DC.

Wow Roy, for every 2 inch of more width tree a permit is needed so the city can tax homeowners more for their ownership seems a bit excessive!

Roy, good thing we don't need permits, I have had 5 trees removed this year.   The aspens were all at the end of their lifespan.

Yikes....I thought we had lots of permits...this is not one we have and hope our city officials don't see this as a fund raising opportunity.

Hi Roy, we have the same permit requirements and you could risk getting fined if you do not follow this advice.

Hello Roy,  I guest I was luck, I help a neighbor take down a try last month that was going dead.  Never figure to check to see if we needed a permit.

Hi Roy, what is surprising to me is the size of the tree that needs a permit. Good information for Gaithersburg residents to know. Living on a lake we also have restrictions on vegetation that is close to the water.
