Lucy The ElephantLucy The Elephant

Recently we took a day ride along the Jersey shoreline to visit Lucy The Elephant in Margate, New Jersey.  She stands day in and day out looking at the ocean and welcoming visitors to take pictures of her as well as pictures from the vantage points on top of her.

Lucy The ElephantLucy is a magnificent wooden structure built back in the late 1800's as a marketing tool to attract buyers of local real estate within eye shot of Lucy's view.  She was actually built a few blocks north but moved to city land to ensure she was not torn down by a private party.  She had a major face lift thanks to the efforts of a kind woman and many others who thought Lucy was worth saving from the wrecking ball.  Lucy is a National Historical Landmark.

If you are ever at the Jersey Shore and have never seen Lucy The Elephant live and up close, I highly recommend you put her on your bucket list for she is a true marvel to behold! ---g

Lucy is a very interesting looking elephant, and worthy of being saved by the wrecking ball.  I love the windows near her tail!

Hi, Gloria...that is something. I would love to go to the top and check out the view. I'm glad someone saved Lucy and she's still around today.

I thought about my visit many years ago to Lucy. Last week I drove up the shore from Cape May to Ocean City (not using the expressway). Except for Cape May and Ocean City, the other towns were almost deserted. I kept expecting to see a tumbleweed blowing down the streets! Anyway, I Love Lucy!

Yes Myrl Jeffcoat I too think they tail windows are an interesting touch.

Debbie Laity when I looked through the portal window at the ocean I felt like I was looking through an earlier time.

Carolyn Roland-Historic Homes For Sale In Delaware, Cecil County, and S. Chester County we just love that "tumbleweed" time in the shore towns.  Sounds like you had an enjoyable drive.

Taking a tour of Lucy the Elephant looks like a fun time. Too bad I live on the opposite coast.

Wow!! Built in the 1800's... I'm sure glad they saved her. What a tragedy it would have been had they not.

Jim, Maybe on your next visit East....

Yes Joan Cox , Children do love it, but you know I usually see adults moreso than children!

Thank you Toni!

Sheila, They are funny!

Hi Joni Staples , It would have been a tragedy!  Too often older structures around here get torn down for gas stations or banks....

I know what you mean. Or else they try to tear them down and replace them with a new one. Thank goodness for historical societies that drum up public support to at least preserve them, even if they do get something new (bridges, etc.)
