Monarchs

The monarch migration to Mexico started on October 9th in Dallas. Now would be a good time to observe your local gardens in North Dallas or an even better place would be  the Dallas Arboretum or the Botanical Gardens in Fort Worth. With a decline in the butterfly population it's important for gardeners to plan to plant an abundance of plants in the spring each year to witness the spectacular flight of the butterfly. I will hate to see them go; yet happy to know I can provide a place of refuge, a sanctuary to help them prepare for their long journey further south to Mexico.

Patricia, I love these little creatures and wrote a blog on them one year ago. I set on my back porch and they fly directly over our home every year, I so look forward to seeing them.

Bob Ratliff - I saw hundreds yesterday. The problem is they were so fast it was hard to get a still picture. Keep your eyes open and your camera ready. I have a feeling they are on their way to Austin and they'll show up any time!!!

Beth Atalay - I like to get input from my local garden shops. I shop at nurseries I can trust and I also observe what attracts butterflies and gives me a variety of colors. Butterflies are important to me and knowing which plants to choose is a wise decision. Those plants are lantana. I believe they grow in FL too.

I haven't seen many Monarchs in TN. The migration sounds so cool! Unfortunately I was reading that the population is way down over the past twenty years from weather issues and pesticide use. Bummer.

Tom White - yes unfortunately it's true. The population of monarchs is way down because of the chemicals in pesticides. I worry now because cities are spraying for West Nile mosquitoes more frequently. It would be a sad day to wake up one day and find out the Monarchs are extinct or gone for good. Let's all do our part to stop pesticides, as best as we could in our own back yards.

Tammie White - the Texas Butterfly Festival at the National Butterfly Center in Mission, Texas is November 1-4. The vally along the northern bank of the Rio Grande on the southern tip of Texas is the best places to see the Monarch migration, such as Sabal Palm Autubon Center near Brownsville, TX, Bensten State Park, near Mission, TX and Quinta Mazatian Park near McAllen, TX.
