Monday, Monday....the lyrics to the Mamas & Pappa's hit kept going through my head as I sat on the couch at River's Edge Cafe in Aurora, IL this mid-morning/lunch time. A overcast rainy day, the lyrics fit the mood as I sat enjoying a large cup of their decaf coffee. Freshly brewed it's aroma was comforting and it tasted like a full cup of regular coffee. Along with the pumpkin muffin I was really enjoying my mini-break to start off my week.
I had been telling myself that I would stop by here since my earlier walk around Aurora in early summer but time just slipped away and here it was October and I still had not stopped by! I am so glad that I finally did. This is the perfect coffee cafe. With plenty of tables, free wi-fi and a selection of both coffee and tea plus some wonderful food selections that don't just include sugary pastries.
I was enjoying myself so much I decided to stay for lunch and enjoyed a wonderful spinach, cranberry and almond salad. The perfect size for someone that is watching their diet and all ingredients were fresh. I had to ask them to remake it without the cheese and they happily redid the order for me without making a fuss.
I love watching people and a young man had his toddler with him. The little girl was just 1.5 years old and was walking around and finding all sorts of things to do. Hannah was just a charming young lady and enjoyed touching the keyboard for my IPAD as Dad hovered to make sure she didn't break anything. I enjoyed a great conversation with him and his daughter as I read a copy of the Wall Street Journal that someone had left.
With no annoying music playing in the background, you can enjoy people watching, reading your email or reading a good book without being drowned out by background music best suited for a dentist's office. I was able to make a brief phone call without raising my voice to be heard which was really nice. From college students from nearby Waubonsee Community College's downtown Aurora campus, to two friends having coffee and knitting, to a family enjoying some lunch with their children who were off today because it's Columbus Day, the clientele's were varied and well behaved.
If you are looking for a change of pace from the busy franchise coffee houses and prefer a quieter more unique location to meet friends, take in a video conference, catch up on the news with a real newspaper or read the latest trashy novel, River's Edge Cafe will fit the bill. The views of the Fox River are wonderful and even the rest rooms are spotless and give you some inspirational words to continue your day! Off I went to do a bit of dancing in the rain that had started while I relaxed.
