Commemorating the Sesquicentennial of the Battle of Franklin (TN)
During the month of November, Franklin TN will be commemorating the 150th anniversary of the November 30, 1864 Battle of Franklin.
Here are a few facts from this famous Battle:
- 30,000 Confederate soldiers from the Army of Tennessee commanded by General John Bell Hood.
- 30,000 Union soldiers from the Army of the Ohio commanded by General John M. Schofield
- 10,000 casualties in five hours of fighting--much of it hand to hand.
- Fourteen Confederate Generals either killed or injured during the Battle of Franklin--more than any other battle during the Civil War.
- 20,000 Confederate soldiers involved in a charge at the fortified Union lines--8,000 more soldiers than Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg.
During November, special exhibits will be available throughout the town, a Civil War reenactment involving 700 participants will take place, panel discussions are scheduled and many other events are on the calendar. Those of us living in Franklin often take for granted the many Civil War Landmarks, the antebellum homes, and the Civil War cemeteries scattered throughout our community dating back to this Battle. Now we have an opportunity to share this heritage.
If you are a Civil War buff, interested in the history of this Battle, or just want an excuse to visit our beautiful community, plan on visiting Franklin TN this Fall!
