A Disheartening Reality Awaited Upon
Our Return To Our Beloved Retreat
We knew it would be disheartening to see the havoc that Hurricane Odile left in its path. In many ways it reminded me of the devastation I saw in the aftermath of Florida's Hurricane Charley and his 3 buddies in '04.
But it really makes you appreciate the human dignity, ingenuity and true grit that takes form within minutes after these tragedies strike leaving thousands homeless and without food and water and hundreds injured and stranded waiting for hours even days for first responders.
Sure we were disheartened to see our once beautiful Villa that we've shared with our family for the past 30 years in shambles. But what really got me right in the solar plexis was the genuine, positive warm hearted greeting and upbeat attitude we received from our entire Hispanic family upon our arrival.
Having gone through what they've been dealing with for the past several weeks and still having the emotional wherewithal to smile and greet us with open arms and love was a truly heartfelt experience. We should have been the ones embracing and greeting them but they didn't let us get the drop on them.
How we all take life so much for granted sometimes and how we react to disaster and tragedy really says a lot about the human element. I've been around a lot of disasters having been a disaster response contractor the the past 3 decades and it still gets me when I see folks come to the aid of others in a time of need.
We usually go to the local Mega Store in San Jose del Cabo and purchase all our groceries so we can prepare most of our meals. This year, however, our mission will be to eat every meal out and tip big and do our small and modest share to help the locals who have always been there for us jump start their badly beaten economy.
But whatever the circumstances we'll belly up to the Palapa Bar and make the best of it knowing that these terrific folks are doing their best to make our lives as comfortable as possible given what they have to work with and all that must be on their plates with they and their families.
If anyone has the opportunity to visit Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo or Los Cabos during the next several months while they are going through their clean up and resurrection please think about all these wonderful folks and how fantastic their attitudes are while they continue to serve you.
Remember they and their families have been through one of the most devastating experiences in their lifetimes. Many of them have lost everything and didn't have insurance or the depth in their wallet or resources to pick themselves up off the ground yet they continue on to serve us and make our stay as enjoyable as possible.
