Why Is This Happening??

By
Real Estate Agent

Hey All!

As you all know I am a new agent and as a way to have steady income I've decided to turn to my strength and that is leasing. I advertise rentals and have gotten lots of calls so far, I look at it as a good way to create good solid relationships, collect email addresses and as many new contacts as possible. I can now confidently make it known that I can also assist on the buying and selling side.  It was a huge financial struggle for me to obtain my armls key and register with an assocaition. Now that I have that, I feel so confident, now I feel like the doors have just opened and it can only o up from here.

Anywho, I'm sure your asking yourself, why is she so surprised?.....Well I advertise other rentals on Craigslist, as I stated above and 99% of the time I have to call other agents to get LB codes or other information in general about their listings. This has been so difficult for me and not because of the prospects but because of other agents. Some never respond to me, some take days to give me codes and there have been a couple that have acutally answered my call or replied to my text right away with entry information or answering my question in regards to the property. Overallmajority I have had to contact in regards to rentals have been non responsive and rude. Why am I so amazed?? I should expect this to happen right?

I just don't understand, I thought we were here to build great relationships not only with our prospects but with each other as agents. I joined activerain and received so many warm welcomes, amazing advice, encouragement and everyone was so kind and so nice to me, it's appreciated because what we do is hard enough and the encouragement and compassion is defintely needed and welcomed!

Not only do I want to be the agent that is well liked and respected by clients and prospects but by other agents as well. I strive everyday like everyone else and I want to be able to be there for other agents as you have been there for me!

You will find this type of behaviour often in this industry.  Remember your days as an onsite property manager or leasing agent and you had to call your competitors for a market survey...They all acted as if we were going to steal their tenants, their marketing ideas and they would often lie about the occupancy.  All of the above only hurt our industry.  We are competitors to some extent, but we are doing a disservice to our clients if we do not show and sell or lease the property.  Keep your chin up and continue doing what you do and you will be fine.

Yes Debi, I see it's really not much difference at all and that is very sad. When you were mentioning the market surveys I immediately thought back to those days. I remember performing market surveys weekly and experiencing the same thing. Thank you again for your words of encouragement and I AM going to keep plugging away.

Elizabeth you would be surprised at response. I wrote a post about one I got this morning It wasn't nice and left me feeling like, why would I let my buyer view your homes when in our market their's many others. I'm learning with my first year almost over. Get a thick coat of armor and a helmet, because some of the things you see and hear just may feel like Teflon coated bullets. When someone treats you nasty or unresponsive follow up with a sugary message and leave it at that, sometimes I just call the brokerage directly and get the information I need to move forward as a last resort when I'm sitting in a driveway with my buyer in the car.

Elizabeth, you are right.  The meanies are not.  Good agents are really nice to newbies or relative newbies.  They know that some day when you are a superstar, you might return the favor.

Elizabeth, I will use a quote often heard at Keller Williams.  "Don't judge your insides by someone elses outside"  Practice being the good agent you want to be, and soon you will be. You will then easily see there is a reason for this type of bully attitude.  As with any bully it boils down to insecurity.  Mark

Thank you Tamara for the feedback.....I'm always very pleasant to the agents I speak with regardless of their tone or attitude towards me :)  Btw, I'm also from St. Louis!

Patricia you are right! Thank you for the advice, I would think it's really important in our business to be pleasant and positive with ALL agents and ALL clients, in the end it's a small industry and you never know who you'll bump into later. you just may need them :)

Mark, I absolutely love that saying, it reminds me of "Be careful of how you treat others, you may be entertaining an angel". It's not about how ppl treat us, its about how we treat them. I'm learning to not take it personal, though sometimes it's hurtful anyway.

Thank you all for the great comments!

Elizabeth Kayla Williams your attitude, ethics and professionalism will always bring you stunning success and your clients will be in good hands.  I have been doing this for years and I am still shocked when I come across the attitude because I believe in the written words of our standards of ethics and conduct.  All you can do is to do the right thing despite what others around you are doing.  You will find the good agents and form good relationships with them and for the rest don't let them get to you.

There are diverse levels of professionalism in this industry (as in all industries). But being your own best professional self (in spite of others) can be its own reward.
