Renewing a Commitment to Train New Agents

This morning started very early.  It was time to renew my certification to mentor new agents.  I was there with bells on.

The real estate industry can be very financially lucrative, but it has added so much more to my life.  I have the confidence to know, with 100% certainty, that I can provide for myself and my family in good times and bad.  My world has become a very big place, mingling with agents all across the country daily here on ActiveRain, and meeting new people in my own town every day.  It's a great feeling to be respected and liked, and to have people say hello just about every where you go.  Clients are so much more than a pay day.  They become your neighbors, part of the community and when you are really lucky, friends.

The big one for me lately is knowing that I am making a difference in a new agent's life by training them and helping them get their career off the ground is so satisfying for me.  I love working with my mentees and bringing them along.  It rejuvenates my love of this career, which can chew you up when you are out there with buyers and sellers all day.

When I first got my license in February 2005, you would never have been able to convince me that that the thrill of selling a house would be even better when it happens to someone you trained.  I am so proud to see my mentees succeed.

And on this very day, I am sending a referral to one of my graduates of the mentee program.  He's blossomed into a fantastic agent and his skills are in areas I have none.  So we are going to have a great business referral system.  I'll be handing off my best friend to him and I have no reservations about it.  And she's so convinced that she's already got another client in mind that could use his land expertise.

Life is better when you give back....and so is business.

Chris Ann, your   mentees are really lucky!  And so many offices don't have any kind of training for mentors - so yours are even luckier than really lucky!

If his skills are in areas where you have none, maybe the student can become the teacher?!?   It's great to build up your referral base with people you know, trust and helped groom.

I can identify with how you feel Chris Ann, for the last decade I have made my role much more of a trainer and coach with the goal of growing good replacements for myself.  Maybe will be a possibility some day.

Pat:  I think that a lot of the new agents are affiliating with our Manassas and Gainesville Long & Foster offices because of the mentor program.

Andrea:  Woo-hoo!  I'd like to get mine to get her license in the new year.

Carla:  That's a great thought.

Chris Ann, Kudos to you. When I first became an agent in 2006, I looked forward to being mentored under my broker at the time. BUT the only time i could get in touch with her was when we had our weekly meeting and it was hard even at that tim. When I asked anyone else for help that was the only time she responded to me because she was the "broker'.  The only time I could count on her was when the other agents complained.  I was always reverting back to my text book and go to the TREC home page. Same thing happened when I went to the next brokerage. It was the weekly meetings or unless I would do an open house for her. Her husband was also broker. Hard to get response or reply from him also. Current broker is quick response and great with everyone. No matter how long an agent has been an agent they still need some mentoring to be good for the brokerage.

When I was a new agent I had no training and practically had to teach myself to be an agent.  I wish I had had a great trainer.

Every pro has a coach and/or trainer. Some like the teachers we had during school were excellent while some others were mediocre. So, hopefully, we're Blessed with excellence by trainers like you who have the confidence and fearlessness to lead by performance. All the best to your continued success.

Rob:  Every mentor-mentee relationship benefits each party.

Judith:  I was mentored as a new agent and I like to give back.

Theresa:  Mentoring is very valuable for the brokerage and I'm shocked more don't do it.
