Every year on Feb. 2, thousands of eager people convene on Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney, PA, to find out if groundhog Punxsutawney Phil has seen his shadow, which means winter will last another six weeks. Here are some interesting tidbits about this famous U.S. tradition.

  • The annual ceremony and festivities are organized by the Groundhog Club and its select Inner Circle, recognizable by their top hats and tuxedos.
  • The first official trek to Gobbler's Knob was made on Feb. 2, 1887.
  • After Phil emerges from his burrow, he speaks to the Groundhog Club president in "Groundhogese," and the president translates his message to the world.
  • According to the Groundhog Club, there has only ever been one Phil. Each summer at the Groundhog Picnic, Phil is given "groundhog punch," an elixir that extends his life for seven years
