Who Cares About NAR? We All Should!

By
Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Vanguard Realty - 904-673-2308

Who Cares about NAR? Who cares about NAR? We all should - what's the alternative? There has been a lot of NAR-bashing lately, and I admit that I'm not 100% pleased with everything coming out of our august Realtor Association, but I would never consider quitting just because of that. I'm not 100% pleased with everything coming out of Washington, DC either, but I'm not going to move to another country.

NAR is not perfect, but can you tell me of any other group or association that works on our behalf year in and year out to protect our industry - our livliehood - our very existence? Do you think that Zillow, Trulia, or the big banks are looking out for our best interest? Do you remember that the banking system has been trying for years to get into the real estate industry and who has worked tirelessly to hold them back? Is your insurance lobbyist, your food and beverage lobbyist, your environmental lobbyist or your big business lobbyist scrapping to protect your right/ability to practice real estate? Just who else can we turn to besides our Congressman (whose attention is fragmented in about a 1000 different directions)?

This leads me to @LeighBrownRemax's piece written for Inman News where she likens those who don't want to be NAR members and those who don't contribute to RPAC to those who want everyone else to have vaccinations so they don't have to.

NAR and NAR's RPAC are our official political voice in Washington and in the nation. You should care about NAR if you are a practicing real estate agent - and if you don't like what you see, get involved. One person with determination can make a world of difference.

Chris Ann Cleland , in a perfect world, there would be no lobbying going on, but until that day, influencers are going to put pressure on politicians for issues they deem important to them and their situation. So how can we influence without funding RPAC?

Susan Jacobsen, like it or not, this is our system and politics does play a role, a big role, in how many issues are resolved in our country.

Really and truly I just want to list and sell Real Estate. If your world is involvement then go for it. NAR is a necessity in this business. Most times good. Sometimes I have to scratch my head and wonder where things come from like syndication.

I, too, admire your enthusiasm for NAR.  I don't see a benefit, and it's a must to be a member of NAR in order to be a member of the RMLS.  So in order to obtain information for my clients on the listings, I have to be a NAR member.

Bill Reddington , NAR is not perfect for sure and thanks for your compliment. Yes, syndication seems to have backfired on them, hasn't it?

Carla Muss-Jacobs, Principal Broker/Owner , that's the way it is here. I'm sure many people would not pay the dues if it weren't tied to their MLS membership. Thanks for the compliment :)

I salute you for your post and for your position, Sharon.  Please do not read any personal animosity into my remarks.  I just have a different opinion.

I am opposed to NAR for many reasons, most of which have been stated by previous commenters.  I look forward to NAR's demise and ultimate extinction.

Sharon - I am joining Fred Griffin on this. The fact that I have to be a member in order to have access and not to pay exorbitant fees being Thompson broker. So I am an unwilling member. Never use the term REALTOR, avoid it at any cost.

When the market was going nuts in mid 2000s, I remember reading every Realtor magazine searching for the word of caution and there was none. Everything was not just rosy, it was going to become even more rosy and better. How many buyers have we, agents, screwed up simply because we kept repeating the lies from NAR. Lies and such level of unprofessionalism, that I can't still understand how this organiozation is even still there.

Plus usurping a commonly used term REAPTOR, and prohibiting its use the way general public uses it, that's enough beef for me to watch them going into oblivion.

Wow, great comments!

I think, I have no choice but pay and be a member. Yet, I'd wish to feel that NAR ppl  care about me......do they?

Decisions are made by the people that show up and get involved.  Look around your assoication and if you want those competitors making your decisions for you, then don't show up - if you don't show up, don't bitch!

Being in Canada I'm not a member of NAR Sharon Alters , but we obviously have our own organization up here looking after things.

The only thing I can say is to be involved and speak up when you think things should be different. Not by commenting on some unrelated board but directly to the powers that be.

Although I respect your right to your opinion, I will disagree. They are NO benefit to me as I even do not believe their paranoid belief & use of RPAC funds. I really think this elected group is actually bad for our future business.

RPAC & a fight against the aggregators is not going to happen. Funds are for political directives only. I'm not even sure if Z funds anything real estate related. It would be good to find out.

I wish the Lending side of the business had somebody representing them as powerful as NAR.

On the Lending side, I can't collect a referral fee for recommending another Lender.  On the Realtor side, I can collect a referral for for recommending antoher Realtor, regardless of if I'm licensed in that State.

It's really not fair, but Realtors are able to do something none of the rest of the Professionals in our industry are able to do ... all because of the lobbying efforts of NAR.

Jon Zolsky, Daytona Beach, FL , many people feel the way you do, and I think in every area we have to read between the lines, as everywhere in the news were predictions of how great it was and would continue to be. There were only a few brave souls crying in the wilderness to watch out, a big fall was coming. I think nobody wanted a stampede of running from investments and so they tried to nurture the market along for as long as possible.

Richard, real estate agents need to get involved if they want to see change. When Congress is about to do something stupid, people get on the phone and email. The same thing applies for NAR.
