World Cup at Squaw Valley Ski Cross and Snowboard Cross

If you love the adrenalin rush of ski cross and snowboard cross, the World Cup at Squaw Valley is where you’ll want to be between March 4 and 8, 2015. The International Ski Federation (Fédération Internationale de Ski, or FIS) will, for the first time since 1969, bring the Audi FIS Ski Cross World Cup and FIS Snowboard World Cup to us. As there will only be two more events following this World Cup, this is an important case of timing for competitors.

Squaw Valley isn’t new to hosting major events, and much of that has to do with its structure. For example, it has hosted the U.S. Alpine Ski Championships, and the U.S. Freestyle Championships. At this year’s World Cup event, seven-time X Games champion Nate Holland will be competing, as will several other global stars including Lindsey (Lucky) Jacobellis from the U.S. and Dominique Maltais from Canada.

Following the pre-race meetings, course preparation, and Men’s and Ladies inspections, taking place between March 1 and 3, a snapshot of the main attractions is as follows:

  • March 4 – Following the ladies and men’s inspection, and course preparation at 1:30, training takes place.
  • March 5 – Things heat up this winter day. Men’s qualification runs start at 11 a.m., ladies at 2:50 p.m.
  • March 6 – Except for the Team Captains’ meetings, this is a day off.
  • March 7 – A full day. Ladies’ and Men’s Finalist Snowboard Cross Training begins at 9:45 a.m. The Final starts at 11 a.m. with the Men’s Snowboard Cross, then the Ladies. These are followed by the semi-final and final races, which begin at noon. Awards and interviews are held from approximately 12:15 p.m.
  • March 8 – On the last official day, the Men’s and Ladies SBX Team events take place, from 11 a.m., then at approximately 11:30 the Ladies and Men’s Snowboard Cross Finals begin. Awards follow.
