Foreign International Students parents buy for children

We are Manhattan New York condo specialists, many of our foreign international buyers are parents of international students who come from oversea, countries from Europe, Asia, Canada, Latin America and other parts of the world.

New York city has many highly distinguished universities and colleges that can offer undergraduate and graduate degrees. We have sold condos to parents that have grown children going to New York University, Parsons School of Design, the School of Visual Arts, Columbia University, the Julliard school, Cooper Union and reputable academic institutions.

Below are some housing options for parents of international students to consider:

School Dormitory: If the student young and very new to New York, the first 6 months to a year, it may be a good idea the student stay in the dormitory so that they can familiarize themselves with the surroundings and make some local friends. This is an option that can usually cost more than renting a non-dorm apartment in the schools’ surrounding areas.

Renting a non-dorm apartment: This is a slightly less expensive option than a school dormitory, Keep in mind that, as an international student, many New York city landlords require an extra security deposit or sometimes 6-12 months’ rent upfront to establish a good relationship as well as security. If that student or parents do not have a Social Security number issued by the United States, nor US credit history, the parents are usually asked to pay for entire 12 months upfront to secure a rental property.

Savvy parents Buying a Manhattan New York condo: This is often the option for many of our international parents. As of January 2015, current market condition, there are many competitively priced Manhattan New York condos that International students and their families can select from. First thing to do is to establish a primary location, and second is the price range and the time frame to move. Determining these factors early on can really maximize the Manhattan New York condo search.

Hi Morgan - often times, parents purchasing for their children going to school, can pay off quite handsomely.  This is likely to be especially true in a high demand area like Manhattan.  You definitely have a great deal of knowledge in the market when it comes to condo/co-op buildings and can be of great assistance to any buyer.

If parents can afford it, there should be no reason for stopping them from buying a Manhattan NY condominium for their children. It is also a good investment in the future.

Morgan, we see a lot of parents buying condos - somethimes houses - for children attending school here in DC.  One family had the apartment appreciate enough to cover 4 years of tuition!
