Baffling Butter Stick Basics 101
I came across this question to a newspaper a while back and thought the Trivia Group of Active Rain might find this interesting. The question was: Why are sticks of butter sold here in Arizona not the same as butter sold in the East? The Arizona kind is shorter and fatter. (You see, this causes a problem with the butter dishes bought back East)
Well, that just hit me right upside the side of my head. Why didn't I notice that, or, more likely...why didn't it connect to my conscious - because reading this question was certainly an "oh yeah!" moment. I HAVE noticed the butter sticks were different.
Well sure enough, the newspaper staff did their research and discovered that yes, for the most part (Land O' Lakes being unique), butter is different in Arizona. The answer was provided by the United Dairymen of Arizona, no less.
It comes to light that the shape of our butter sticks is a "regional preference". In the West, butter comes in a ‘Western flat.’ In the East it’s called an ‘Elgin quarter.’
So, do your background study before butter dish buying. It will be necessary to know whether you are buying for your Elgin Quarter or your Western Flat.
And...now you know.
