Pottery workshop at the Hui Noeau - my dad's hobby on Maui
Yesterday I showed you the great looking main house at the Hui Noeau. On the lower end of the grounds is the pottery workshop and studio. It actually consists of the old facility which is housed in the former horse stables, and the newer facility which is nearby and accessed from Kaluanui Road.
Here's the new building which is where the classes are held, and the pottery is thrown or built. Once the items are ready for firing and glazing to move over to the old building. They have sensibly installed a nice array of solar panels to help with the cost of running the electric kiln.
The old building is really funky and rustic, I guess you could say. Since making pottery is a messy business, it's okay to make a mess here. Some of these items will end up for sale in the gift shop at the main house.
My dad comes to Maui every winter to get out of the rain of Vancouver. This hobby keeps him busy, but lately he is not quite as interested.
Dipping a plate into a bucket of glaze. This will eventually be a green color.
Drying the dipped plates in the sun between coats. He was putting 3 different colors on these plates.
It takes steady hands to do this work. Not bad for a 93 year old!
Cleaning up the mess in the messy old stable. This building has seen some history.
This is the main kiln where those plates and other items will be fired. There's more than one kiln here, and they each have different uses. Hopefully these plates will get done before too long so we can enjoy the finished product. I have a great collection in my home already, and my dad has a lot of fans here on the island and back in Vancouver.
