This Yakima Valley  (Washington State) wine was named by owner Owen Roe and winemaker David O’Reilly in 2002.  “They were moved by the stark contrast between the forest fire –blackened land in the Yakima Valley, Washington and the verdant grapevines full of fruit, located literally at the edge of the wildfire.”

This is the photo of a wine label.  It is very simple. The label is a single strip and it looks like it is handwritten calligraphy.  It is in Latin, Ex Umbris, which means “From shadows”.  It is a standout amid the usual wine labels. The bottle itself has no outer foil or wax to remove.  All you need is a corkscrew to get it out.

This is the back of the label repeating the front and continuing the Latin sentence with “Ex Umbris et imaginibus in veritatem” or in “From shadows and symbols goes the truth”.

We picked up this bottle of wine on the advice of Jane, our Carpinteria Wine maven, to pair with barbecued ribs.  She characterized it as a class unto itself in the world of Syrah for the price and we agree.  Wine Spectator gave it 91 points and stated, "Focused, dense and polished, with blackberry, cherry and floral flavors on a glassy, smooth texture, lingering easily and showing some transparency on the finish. Has intensity and grace. Drink now through 2018.”

We appreciate this remarkable simple brand.  It is a stand out amid all the other Syrah brands and has a great story to goes with it.  It is unforgettable!

Good morning Roy. I am a bit familiar with that area, as I once took a house in trade in Yakima WA. Spent a couple of days there and can understand why so many are attracted to the area.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel did a great job with the post, as they always do.
