Tax Season is Finished

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with CastNet Realty TREC#263257

For most, tax season is over and you can breathe a sigh of relief.  For others, an extension had to be filed.  Too many things to do, not enough time, other people's schedules got in the way and a myriad of excuses or reasons why the taxes could not get filed on time.

If you are like me, filing taxes is the last thing that gets done on my schedule.  I would much rather write a blog on Active Rain than sit down for an hour or two and work on getting my tax receipts ready to be filed.  I rarely procrastinate about anything but when it comes to taxes, I have a million other things that take priority.

Taxes             Taxes          Taxes            Taxes                Taxes             Taxes

I would rather wash dishes.  I would rather iron clothes!  I would rather change a baby's diaper.  I would rather hoe weeds in the garden.  I would rather wash the car.  I would rather take out the trash.  I would rather come dust your furniture.  Anything but work on taxes!

taxes              taxes                        taxes                         taxes                          taxes                  taxes                     taxes                        taxes

My receipts, file folders and boxes have been siting on the table in plain view for over a month now.  I put them in plain view so I have to walk by them several times a day, reminding me of the importance of getting this stuff done.  Yes, it is depressing.  I sit down and work a little at a time on it.  I am almost finished finally!  Only another hour or so and I will be completely done.  Yay!!

Then, I can start all over again for 2015.  Yes, that's right.  It is April 15th and I have not started the 2015 bookkeeping yet at all.  After all, taxes are my way of proscrastination.

Do you find you are in the same category as me?  Do you have other excuses, I mean reasons, not to do your tax work.  Do you wait until the last minute to do the things that should have been done months ago?  Why are taxes so hard to get done?  Why do I have this mindset about taxes when everything else in my life is so organized and completed before the deadlines?

Taxes are my worst enemy when it comes to time management.  They have been my downfall forever.  This year I will overcome!  2015 will be different.  I will keep telling myself this.  Hopefully, next year when I write my tax blog, I will be able to say,  "Done, before the time ran out!"

My 2015 resolution:  Get it done now!

Hi Ricki, I am in your category (unfortunately) and I'm still staring down that barrel. In about an hour or so I will get going. I bought TurboTax yesterday. I'm ready (physically) but I'm not ready (mentally). But it will be done before midnight.

I file an extension every year. Taxes are so complicated that it takes regular small biz owners about 3 months of working for the IRS to get it all together and to pay. I hate taxes. I hate the work that goes into it. It is the one thing that I procrastinate on and I am not ashamed of it either. It is a waste of valuable time. I have an accountant to do my taxes but there is still a ton of work to do on my end. Not only that, but we have 3 businesses so it is even more work for me. I set a time for 20 minutes per night about 3 days a week to work on taxes starting in January of each year. It is the only way I can even deal with it. ARGH!!!! And what I hate even more is when people say, "Oh you should be happy you pay taxes, that means you made money!"  That is some bs if you ask me. No matter how much money I make I will never be happy to pay taxes, I will never equate the two. It is robbery of our private property. Sorry, off my rant now! Katerina

Hi Praful,  You've got that right! :)

I'm with you , Fred!

Hi Joan,  Join the real estate crowd! :)

Hi Katerina,  You said it so well!  We have to spend way too much time getting all this stuff together.  Some people do not understand how hard it is and how much time it takes.

I resolved last year to make the process easier...it is too easy to procrastinate.  So I was prepared, quarterly.  Made my estimated payments, revised all the receipts and books.. I was able to get everything to the accountant and file yesterday......with a refund!  This is the first time that has happened in 12 years.  What a surprise and sigh of relief.  I attribute it to being better prepared this year.  I am already on schedule with the first quarter in the books.  Looking forward to this year! Good luck to you!
