You Might Be From Louisville, KY If...

You might be from Louisville, KY if…

  1. You will happily drive across the city to find the perfect hostess gift from that locally owned store you’ve recently heard about. Rush hour traffic? No problem. It’s worth the hike; we pride ourselves on shopping local. You might even be a regular at any of the area’s darling little boutiques. You can’t beat the feeling of walking in and being greeted by name. Louisville, KY is called the “biggest small town” for a reason!

  2. You will drop everything for basketball. It really takes priority over most things in your life. Whether you cheer for the Cards or Cats, your loyalty is life-long. Come March, households are divided. People outside of Kentucky have a hard time understanding such intensity, but basketball is serious here in the Bluegrass! You are careful not to wear the wrong color because of the risk of being associated with the wrong crowd.

  3. You spend weeks preparing an ensemble for one event. But hey, it’s the Kentucky Derby! Hat? Check. Dress? Check. Jewelry? Bowties? Pastel pants, socks, and suit coats? Check. Check. Check. Dressing for Churchill Downs is an event in itself. Anyone who’s anyone wears the perfect Derby hat to complement their outfit. We’ll even polish off our welcoming Southern charm and host Derby parties open to anyone who feels like stopping by. Every invitation tells us to “Bring a friend!” We want to show off our Derby best to as many people as we can.

  4. While we're talking about the Kentucky Derby, you also have absolutely no problem with your kids receiving a day off of school for a horse race. It is the best two minutes in sports, you know! We will happily send our children to school far into the days of June (always making up for those pesky snow days!) before sacrificing the amazing few days known as Kentucky Derby weekend. It's a holiday. It's sacred. Folks outside of Louisville just don't understand.

  5. You could feed your family for weeks simply by visiting the city’s locally owned restaurants. We love our food, and we love to proudly call ourselves “foodies”. What’s better than becoming a food expert and supporting local business? To a Louisvillian, next to nothing. The city is full of these little gems, and if you’re from Louisville, Bardstown Road can only mean one thing: Restaurant Row. The only thing better than buying local is eating local, and we sure know how to show the rest of the country how it’s done. Have some guests visiting for the weekend? You know of the PERFECT little local restaurant. Don’t kid yourself. You’ve said those words more times than you can count.

  6. And finally, you might be from Louisville if you actually pronounce our glorious city's name correctly. LOU-UH-VUHL. There is a right way, and there is a wrong way. Although you may hear various pronunciations out on the street, life-long Louisville lovers know the truth. We have a LOT of Louisville pride!

Pam Ruckriegel, I really enjoyed reading this post with your observations and insights on Louisville.  The love and pride that the people there have for their city comes through loud and clear.  Eugene, Oregon where I'm from prides itself on buying local too.

Our REALTOR Association is having a Kentucky Derby party in a few weeks.  Coincidentally, I was married on the day that the Derby was held.  Being originally from Arizona, I favor a different Wildcat team but enjoy watching a well-played basketball game.

Thank you for writing such a terrific post, sharing with us what Louisville is all about, and for participating in the ActiveRain contest.

I've never been to the races, but it seems to be the event for many people, not just the local people in Louisville.

Claude, it is such a fun event, and the whole Derby Festival lasts for about 3 weeks leading up to the Derby, so something for everyone!
