Do You Have A Sabbath Rest?
This year, the real estate market is poised to sell as many homes as way back in 2007, so more than ever it is important to consider - do you have a Sabbath rest? As far back as the book of Genesis, there was a proclaimed day of rest for God's people when God Himself rested the Seventh Day. Don't you think you need one too?
We have a couple of real estate friends whose voice messages alert callers that on Sunday, they will call them on Monday. Last year I worked with one of them on a sale, and we spoke on Sunday, so it's not that they won't take care of urgent matters, but for the general caller, this is one day out of their very busy real estate world that they are taking a break.
We all need a rest. Have you ever been burned out - are you burned out now? A wise person once said that if we don't have our health, we don't have anything. If you don't take a break, burnout will soon follow and guess what happens? You are less efficient, more irritable, and stress can take a toll on your mind, body and soul.
Here's how I do my Sabbath rest many weeks - it loosely follows the Jewish Sabbath, except theirs starts on Friday at sundown and mine starts on Saturday and often before sundown. If there is real estate business, I try to wrap it up by mid afternoon to early evening on Saturday and then put away the technology (except important calls) for the rest of the day and spend time with family and friends. Sunday morning is church, lunch and then enjoy the day. If there are active transactions, they are handled and then Sunday evening is time to look at the week's calendar and make Monday's To Do list.
Do I break my own rule? Of course. There are times when relocating Buyers demand my weekend time, and when work spills into Saturday evening or Sunday after church, but then I try to grab some time during the week to call my own. Jesus healed on the Sabbath, recognizing that sometimes we have to help people in need even during our resting time.
If you're new to real estate and really gung ho, then you may be burning the candle at both ends. Stop it before you flame out - give yourself a regular break and partying at night doesn't count. If you're a seasoned pro like we are, take care of yourself for the long haul - your family, friends and clients will thank you.
