I could not resist to re-blog this post. Thanks to our newer member Jacquelyn Brooks .

Every one of us 'started' our career in some field. We learn and earn the experience.

What should you do when you start afresh?

I still can remember how excited I was to pass the real estate exam.  I could not wait to decide on the RE Broker that would be holding my license.  I started interviewing brokerages and found there were not many out there that would and could help a new agent.  You pretty much had to get out there and do it yourself.  Learn the ropes, seek and find, hit or miss.  The agents that were successful definitely did not have time to mentor you.

Now after ten years or more, it is still the same.  You can find some that are eager to tell you  success stories on marketing techniques and closing techniques etc., but for the most part things have not changed.  I have made a conscious effort to help new agents grow their business and/or answer questions when they have a need.  I may not all of the answers and if that is the case, I know how to direct them to find the information they need to form an opinion.

Some suggestions to new agents:

  1.  Do not spend money you do not have on paid marketing techniques.  Wait until you have closed a few deals.

  2. Utilize your Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Linkedin Social Media family.

  3. Find a Broker that will give leads.  You may take a lower commission split, but something is better than nothing.

  4. Try to join or become a member of a Realtor Board.  Some Brokers require this, but there are still some out there that leave that decision at your discretion.

  5. Find a Mentor.  Ask to shadow them on some of their appointments.

  6. Tell everyone you have your sales license.  Do not be shy.  This was a problem for me at first.  Believe me, do not make that mistake.  You will miss out on quite a few deals

STAY TUNED .  MORE TO COME!

You are right Joe Petrowsky - expecting a lead from broker is not something that I'd rely on.

Even as a new agent, I knew I am responsible for my own leads.

In our industry, we have many drop outs in the first two years!

Many of them just leave this industry because they did not find the right mentor.

Joan Cox - this guidance is very important for new agents - or they'd be one of the stats!
