Touchy Feely or Arms Length?

By
Real Estate Agent with Re/Max Realty Specialists

I'm tossing this out there to see how other Realtors handle the "invite".  Many of my clients often invite me over to their homes after they have sold or purchased for a social gathering or meal.  I'm not talking about a "housewarming" party, its as though they'd like to build or enhance the relationship.

For those people who move from out of town, we as Realtors are the first friendly faces they meet.  So do they "like me, really like me" a la Sally Field or is it just courtesy or do they want "free advice" etc.  How do you handle the professional side of your relationship with your client versus the personal side.  Is it always arms length, if so we stand to lose alot of great friendships?  Or if its touchy feely when do we cross the professional line? Your thoughts!

Buying or Selling? Ann & Jim are the local experts

Whenever someone invites me over for dinner or a party I'm there.

I think lots of new buyers might invite their Realtor because you're often one of the few people in the area they know fairly well.

Sellers wouldn't invited you to anything unless they though you did a pretty good job getting their house sold so I would take advantage to network and meet future business while the good vibrations of a recent success story were still strong in the air.

I get asked for free real estate advice all the time.

In fact the pew my wife and I usually sit in at church is towards the back and we share one end with a couple who used to operate a garage; we call our end of the pew "the advice corner". people are always stopping by asking car or housing questions. ;-)

I would go. Your profession is all based on relationships and networking. I would hope that you are offering everyone free advice, otherwise the next agent will. It is part of what you do and the positive impact it has on your business is great.

Great Blog!  However you feel deep inside about the issue is what you should do.
