"I'm Just Here So I Don't Get Fined"- The Active Rain Version

If you're an NFL fan you know what I'm talking about.  Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch is not a fan of speaking to the media, however he is contractually obligated to do so after games and at major press days, such as before last February's Super Bowl.  In protest of this he answered every question at the Super Bowl media day with, "I'm just here so I don't get fined" and said nothing else until his mandatory time was up.  I've noticed in my time on Active Rain that many "Rainers" really have the same attitude towards activity on the site but instead of worrying about fines they're worried about points.  The most recent example was a comment I received on my post about the Fed holding off on a rate hike.  The comment was:

"   Hi,  what an opportunity for buyers in your area.    Thanks for sharing with us in AR Land."

I read that comment and wondered exactly how it made sense, I mean wouldn't it be a benefit to buyers in any area?  So then I went about my business of reading up on some of the other blogs and there was the same user with the same comment.

"   Hi,  what an opportunity for buyers in your area.    Thanks for sharing with us in AR Land."

Except this time it made even less sense for the subject that blog was written about.  Then I saw the exact same comment on another blog and it made even less sense for that subject matter than the one before.  It was clear that this user was copying and pasting his comments and placing it in the comments to get his max commenting points for the day.  He's not the only one as I've had many comments on blogs in which it was obvious that the commentator didn't read the subject matter.   I'm not really sure what the point of "point gathering" is if you're not getting anything out of it besides points.  Yes I understand there is a discount for certain point milestones but aren't we really here to a) share ideas and b) build relationships? I'm not sure how effectively you can do that if you're copy/pasting comments into other users' blogs, especially if it doesn't apply to their subject manner in the slightest way.  However, it's a free country so if gathering points makes you happy than go for it.  If you choose to do so help the rest of us out by copy/pasting the following comment so we don't waste time reading it:

"I'm just commenting on your blog post to get my points"

Thanks for understanding and by the way, I just wrote this blog to get my points.

Yes I agree with Bob above, these types just don't get the whole AR community thing.  Hopefully they will at some point see the value in really connecting on an honest level with others.

THANK YOU MIKE!  I've been seeing that again lately and meant to write a post but just been too busy.  Now I hope whoever is leaving these inane comments reads this post and decides to leave comments that add value.

I usually give these folks a taste of their own medicine (for my own amusement, and the points I get for commenting on their blogs).  Bob Stewart mentioned the right way to go about these folks, but I don't think there's anything wrong with shaming them out of the habit, either.

Love the title lol!  Serial commenters have been around since points began and they probably aren't likely to go anywhere.  There's always someone trying to game the system.  It is what it is.

Yes, we get these from time to time or the comments that so totally miss the target that it's obvious the writer didn't read the post. It's somewhat annoying but at least it's not life threatening! :-)

What's even more infuriating is when they post the same meaningless comment twice - back to back - and "double dip" the points.  I report them all.  Under the "old" system, when a human looked at the flagged comments, they would do something about it.  The Zillow robots don't do anything when you report these abusers.  But, as a poster, you can always delete the comment, and that way the person will loose the points!

I see these comments also and just roll my eyes.  Obviously for those posters, getting points is much more important than learning new material, making relationships, possibly getting referrals someday, etc...

The copy and paste comments have been going on here forever.  We're not stupid but apparently the copy and pasters think we are and that we don't talk.  I do not comment on their blogs at all.  I find them insulting.

Bob is correct.  These type of folks do flame out over time. They have nothing to contribute.. and points alone will not get them business.... content is important.

Some are a bit better than others at it, but still in all it is a serial commenter. Now if only someone could come up with a really good cut/paste comment that is truly a one size fits all comment.... maybe we need an AR contest for that.

Whaddya think Bob Stewart , contest worthy? Patricia Kennedy could volunteer to give away some of her bazillion points she earned from all her serial commenting away to the winner.

I often wonder why someone would even bother as there is little reward for points  The best comment I have seen here is the one from Bob Stewart, just because he has been so scarse,  and hopefully we will see more of him in the immediate future

Yup, I see those too.

I always respond/like people who comment on my posts.  On those drive-by's, I don't do either, and often report them as spam (if the user has 2000 points, he/she is a spammer and we need to get rid of them).

I just wonder though, really? Does this help them in any way?

Let's all ignore them and drive them away by refusing to acknowledge.
