If you're an NFL fan you know what I'm talking about. Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch is not a fan of speaking to the media, however he is contractually obligated to do so after games and at major press days, such as before last February's Super Bowl. In protest of this he answered every question at the Super Bowl media day with, "I'm just here so I don't get fined" and said nothing else until his mandatory time was up. I've noticed in my time on Active Rain that many "Rainers" really have the same attitude towards activity on the site but instead of worrying about fines they're worried about points. The most recent example was a comment I received on my post about the Fed holding off on a rate hike. The comment was:
" Hi, what an opportunity for buyers in your area. Thanks for sharing with us in AR Land."
I read that comment and wondered exactly how it made sense, I mean wouldn't it be a benefit to buyers in any area? So then I went about my business of reading up on some of the other blogs and there was the same user with the same comment.
" Hi, what an opportunity for buyers in your area. Thanks for sharing with us in AR Land."
Except this time it made even less sense for the subject that blog was written about. Then I saw the exact same comment on another blog and it made even less sense for that subject matter than the one before. It was clear that this user was copying and pasting his comments and placing it in the comments to get his max commenting points for the day. He's not the only one as I've had many comments on blogs in which it was obvious that the commentator didn't read the subject matter. I'm not really sure what the point of "point gathering" is if you're not getting anything out of it besides points. Yes I understand there is a discount for certain point milestones but aren't we really here to a) share ideas and b) build relationships? I'm not sure how effectively you can do that if you're copy/pasting comments into other users' blogs, especially if it doesn't apply to their subject manner in the slightest way. However, it's a free country so if gathering points makes you happy than go for it. If you choose to do so help the rest of us out by copy/pasting the following comment so we don't waste time reading it:
"I'm just commenting on your blog post to get my points"
Thanks for understanding and by the way, I just wrote this blog to get my points.
