Google Webmasters Uncovering Invisible Web Pages- Will Members Only Posts Be Revealed?

The Official Google Webmasters' Blog announced that they have discovered some new and innovative ways to get the spiders to crawl into places they otherwise have not been able to get into.

Google invisible web

Lately they found ways to spider through Flash to get to the content on sites that use Flash which was a big no no in marketing to do with your site in prior times.

Now they believe that they have found a way to spider deep through sites to reach HTML pages that you can not get into without filling out a contact form or other form specifically looking for content that is not in Google's index. This way they can index more pages. Google's position is this creates a better user experience in that they will be able to bring to that user very specific content based on their search query. They will be able to index HTML pages deep within sites. There have long been pages that are considered the invisible internet.  This will not affect your page rank and according to Google there are not that many pages that are a part of this experiment. But as with all experiments the end is usually not the intent at the onset.

The invisible web

Does this mean that the spiders will go through to sites intended for membership use only? There are a lot of sites where the site owner makes their money through their site being members only. If Google brings that information to the searcher is that not violating someone else's ability to make money?

What about members only posts on Active Rain? Will these intended to be private posts begin to show up on searches if the content fits the query and their is nothing else indexed within that search?  Is the time coming where there will be nothing private any longer?

Google is offering FREE medical records storage on Google. This way your doctors and you just have one place to go to find your records. But does that mean that one day they will be able to index these files and share your private medical history with others?

Now according to the Google Webmasters' Blog; Google says they will not follow 'no follow links' to get content, they will not retrieve information where a password needs to generated and that they will not come into our members only type places to retrieve data and content. For now, this is their position.

On the other hand, just knowing that they know how to get this information is a bit scary if the wrong hands ever get a hold of Google.

I can see both sides, how about you?

Thanks for the post. It is a scary thought because of identity theft and scams. If people can get hold of bank records etc this way.

Gita- Oh, that is the least of our worries! This has the capabilities of filterized information, a breach in our liberty to access objective information. Identity theft is just what Big Brother wants you to focus so as your freedoms get stripped away, you are saying, that is OK! It is a much bigger picture than you can imagine. No, I don't dwell on it, but I am realistic about the future and therefore I strive to stand up for my liberties.

Everybody's got this WAY WRONG.

Since this post has gotten everyone all scared and feeling violated, let me clarify a few things for you about what's really going on here.

First of all, please rest assured that Google should not be able to access the "Members Only" posts, or your medical records, or bank records.

All Google does is to index the publicly available information online. This is all it CAN DO. Google cannot decide tomorrow to get "all evil" on us and start making your bank records show up online. Any information that requires authentication (ie logging in) is and never will be accessible to Google. It is up to each web site that has information stored to determine if it can be accessed by anyone, or only by specific people. So if ActiveRain "members only" posts are only accessible once you've logged in to ActiveRain, then Google can not index them unless ActiveRain wants them to.

What the Google blog post is really about, this "Invisible Web", is just about accessing publicly-accessible information that is currently not in Google because the webmasters of those sites don't really know what they're doing and thus the information is not "search engine friendly". These new features simply expand the types of web pages that are considered "search engine friendly." Nothing more, nothing less.

Nothing to see here folks, please move on.

As always~GOGGLE IS "Big Brother" in this case and they seem to be able to do whatever they want if they can find a way to justify it.

Alan- Thanks for sharing in the conversation. I am not concerned about banking info being made public. I am concerned about filtering information such as what is done in China and North Vietnam. Google bends towards government demands and requirements, that is the long term concern. Google said they are not going to make member only posts public. That is not the concern.

Doug- I think Big Brother is our government and those above the government, whoever they may be, pulling the strings. It is in whose bed does Google end up sleeping?

Webmasters can use a robot.txt file in the root directory of their website to instruct files or directories that Google or other bots should ignore. The Google Bot will not suddenly get user accounts and login, they will only be able to see what someone without a password can see.

To see your site as a bot sees it take a look at: http://www.delorie.com/web/lynxview.html.

We have Flash on our site, but we code the site in such a manner that Google sees a text version of the content the Flash provides. The text version also works well when users are on a cell phone or PDA that doesn't support Flash.

Geoff- That is a very good idea of how you get the bots to see text in your Flash content. Thanks for sharing that tip. I know they won't but it is healthy to stir up a bit of controversy:) I still wonder about the filtering and subjective power. If they are doing it in China, that means it is being done.
