McArthur-Burney Falls - 8th Wonder of the World
Last weekend, I took a short vacation up to McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park. The waterfall is considered the 8th natural wonder of the world by President Theodore Roosevelt. It can be found between the Shasta and Lassen mountains in Northern California within the Cascade Range and the Modoc Plateau. The 129 foot Burney Falls is truly a sight to be seen and experienced. As I hiked to the bottom of the fall, I was able to experience about a 15 degree drop in temperature. Perfect place to visit with the family during our hot and humid Summer months.
This is a volcanic area made up of mostly black volcanic rock and basalt. Snow and rain water is retained through the porous basalt which forms an underground reservoir which then flows out to what is know as the Burney Falls. The fall is located north of Redding CA, along highway 89 near Burney CA
About 100 million gallons of water flows down the waterfall everyday.
Ca's drought has impacted Burney Falls
Burney creek originates from the underground reservoir that
collects rain and snow, then it flows down to Lake Britton.
Visitors hike along Burney loop where it passes through two majestic bridges.
The northern bridge is the location where many rainbow trouts are caught.
The park is open from sunrise to sunset year round

Burney Falls was named after Samuel Burney who lived in the area around 1850's. They were responsible for protecting the land from developers. Eventually the descendents gave the land as a gift to the state of California during 1920's. It took two tries before the state finally accepted this gift.
