What do you think is the cause of all the recent shark attacks?

My two grandsons are coming to visit this weekend from south Florida.  I am planning to take them to the Outer Banks for a couple of days.  I am concerned about all the recent shark attacks, but my son told me they are more likely to die in a car accident or plane crash and not to worry about it.

This brings a question to mind:  What do you think is the cause of all the recent shark attacks?

Do you think it is because of global warming?

Well, from what I have heard the amount is actually lower but the news is reporting on it more.  Typical!

I have read that is is more due to the bait fish coming closer to shore than they have in the past.  In our area the water is still too cold for swimming and the warmest water is still closest to shore

Some sharks have been detected swimming in the Mississippi River as far north as Illinois and in the Ohio River in Indiana.

They are wearing new shark phones with GPS that detects where people are splashing in the water.

Ed Silva,  I'm taking my grandsons to the Outer Banks next week where there have been several shark attacks.  I will be keeping a very close eye on them for sure..

Jerry Lucas,  OK I guess that is a tall tale, right?  I for one don't want to be in the water where sharks are swimming.

Sybil, yes that is for sure. We hit a bear while driving home on a Memorial Day Weekend in 2012.  It was a wonderful weekend that ended frightfully.

No tall tale about sharks in the Mississippi River as far north as Illinois.  Bull sharks are able to retain salt in their bodies and have been found in fresh water rivers and lakes.  Here is a story from National Geographic

Jerry Lucas,  I'm surprised they are that far north and in fresh water, but I don't plan to be in that area!

I was surprised when I first learned about river sharks in fresh water.

When author Peter Benchley wrote the novel Jaws, he did research on shark attacks that occurred in New Jersey in 1916.  Several people were killed by a shark in Matawan Creek, 16 miles inland from the ocean.

Bull sharks have been found in the Potomac River in Maryland, Lake Ponchartrain, Louisiana, some reports in the Great Lakes, and in the Amazon River, 2500 miles inland, in Peru and Bolivia.

Patrol drones might be useful to spot sharks from the air to warn swimmers.

Jerry Lucas,  What a great idea to use patrol drones in that way.

Here on the west coast, I think it is the warmer waters of the ocean that is causing our sea lion population to be in distress.  Their food source is moving north to colder waters.  I suspect sharks are having similar issues, and migrating to different areas.  If you can't find food that dwells in the sea, you might find food that dwells on land, but dips its toes in the sea!

Myrl Jeffcoat, that makes perfect sense to me.  Fortunately they are safe and sound, on a plane and should be home soon.
