You Got My Attention.  You Won't Get My Business

"Hi Jon!", the email began.

Ok, it's pretty easy to forget an 'h'.  A typo, perhaps.

"I'm not sure you're still in the mortgage industry", she continued.

"OH COME ON, IT'S ALL RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU, ARE YOU THAT How to NetworkLAZY!?!?", I thought.

This was how a message I recently received through LinkedIn started off.  It then went on to tell me how when I referred clients to this service provider, they'd do an amazing job for them.  They're in a field that requires pretty extensive attention to detail.  I laughed.

I'm not one of those 'invisible' people on LinkedIn that created a profile and hasn't visited the site in the past decade.  I have my profile up to date, I share status updates fairly regularly, and am constantly growing my network.  It's not difficult, with about 4 seconds worth of research, to determine that I'm still in the mortgage industry.  The sad part is this is someone that I used to be friends with, and have sent business to in the past.

So what's my point, aside from throwing her under the proverbial bus, putting it in reverse, and running her over again?  Simply to share one of the worst marketing mistakes any of us can make.  A mistake I made often early in my career.

We want to reach out to people and tell them all about us.  We want to show them we're worthy of their referrals.  We want them to know us.  But we don't take the time to focus on them.  We don't know them, or their business, who they know, or how they do things.  Sometimes (the dummy above) we don't even know if they spell their name "John" or "Jon", nor which industry they're in.  When it comes to effective networking (effective being the key word), we need to realize it's not about us.  It's about them.

Research is a game changer when it comes to networking.  Like with a job interview, the more you know about your prospective employer, the more impressive and better prepared you'll be in your interview.  Likewise, with marketing, the more you know about your "target", the better off you'll be and the easier that relationship will be to build.  The good news is this - in the past it was difficult to research someone - you had to rely on mutual contacts, newspapers, press releases, etc.  Today, all it takes is a quick google search.  Or a perusal through a LinkedIn profile.  It's not that difficult.

I've made countless connections (and before I learned this lesson, probably lost out on a bunch, too) because I took the time to learn about people.  I have no desire to do business with everyone, and you shouldn't, either.  Instead, research prospective partners, learn about them, and decide if it's someone you'd want to work with.  Then focus on them - what are their interests?  Strengths?  Weaknesses?  When you know these things, it becomes so easy to find what value you can offer.  People always refer to real estate as a sales industry.  It's not.  It's a people industry.

But if you can't take the time to spell someone's name correctly (when it's RIGHT.IN.FRONT.OF.YOU.), then don't even bother, I can tell you from experience, it's not worth the effort.  You can get anyone's attention, but it takes a little more effort to get business.

You are spot on John!  It doesnt take a mental giant to perform a few clicks.  Definitely spamming for biz.  I have met wonderful connections on Linkedin because I build relationships with them.  Same here in #Active Rain.

John,

I should have been an editor in a previous life.  I find errors all the time in "professional" material that is mailed or e-mailed to me.  I think too many people rely on spell check and/or they don't know how to spell correctly. When I go to a coffee house and tell them my name, most of the time, they spell it Jean or Jene (it is Gene, short for Eugene).  That doesn't upset me as much as the aforementioned "professionals".  I noticed one of the comments above had an incorrectly spelled word.  Perhaps we are too quick to respond and then we don't check our posting?

John Meussner I use LinkedIn the same way you do. I will"network" with anyone, but only refer business to those I know and who know me, When they address me as William I know they don't know me and haven't even taken the trouble to find out how I call myself.

Whenever I get any contact message and they spell my name "nichole" I immediately delete it. If you don't know me well enough to spell my name right, which coincidentally is in my actual email address, then I'm not going to take you serious.

What a great post John. It's so important to remember that not only should we be concerned with how we can help our clients and understand their needs . We also have to understand all about who where doing business with and who we refer. I don't even connect with anyone that won't put their picture on linked in or their business picture. If they cannot even bother about that I don't think there going to be a good referral.

Good morning John. This would be funny if it weren't so sad. Start with the name. Nice post and true.

I have never gone by anything but Theresa and yes the h is silent but I will accept pronuciation with the "h".  I will correct anyone who tries to call me anything other than Theresa; such as Terry, Tess, Teresita, etc. Spell it wrong and you'll get it corrected and directed to my email signature. It is just downright rude. My surname has been misspelled so many times and it's a simple 4 letter spelling, "Akin", no d, t, e y, or s. One correspondent spelled it with all the letters so she wouldn't miss any. You're still wrong! i'll bet that check better have it right though!!

Yeah John! Or is it Jon. Anyway Yeah! Great post. I can always tell a real call from a fake call by the way someone pronounces my not so easy to pronounce last name.

Let's see is it Erickson, Anderson, Andreeson, Arendensen? No dummy! If you really knew me or at least took the time to phonetically pronounce the syllables you would call me ARENDSEN. Broken down AR END SEN pronounced ARENSON. The D's silent.

Of course I don't expect everyone who doesn't know me to know that. But if they just took that extra couple of seconds to look at the syllables common sense would usually win out.

Or they're just telemarketers seeing how many calls they can cram in in an hour in order to keep their desk. This will be my reblog for tomorrow for sure.

Its a numbers game,   . .  maybe.  If you send out 100 emails to "Jon", it is probable that a few of them will be spelled correctly. And maybe those few will do business with you. But if you don't send out anything, you will certanly get nothing back.

While I don't agree with it, I understand the theory.  It is a constant struggle to try to figure out how best to spend your time and effort.

That is why we are here on AR learning and contributing. Thanks for the post.

Notice the correct spelling! LOL

What troubles me more is not the name spelling but the stupid introduction. I get this all the time - are you still in real estate? Are you still interested in having clients in the ___ area. Really? Or when they say - I was doing a search online but I had a hard time finding you...but you just did, dodo. Goodbye

But it does raise a good point about the accuracy of our communications - that first impression for someone who does not know us can be a game changer. To buyer and seller prospects we are potentially a telemarketer they don't know yet. How we present ourselves is key to getting to the next step

Hi John Meussner Not sure you are still reading these......!  I agree with you...I receive so many contacts from all over and they know nothing about me but know they can help me.

I used to have a business name of Affinity Real Estate Group...I changed it many years ago to simply Mike McCann-Broker  and yet I still get calls all the time about it from salespeople since the number and address are the same.

We can all make mistakes.  But something that drives me absolutely nuts is someone telling me they can't find me or my contact info, John Meussner.  Really???  And these same people will be those on the same social media sites as I am ... as well as on the internet too.

Think it through!  And as you say, don't be lazy ... at least give it a try and Google it!
