The next time you're tempted to write a rant, . . .

I like to blog everyday, but it doesn't happen. Some days are just too busy, and other days are too stressful. Some days, there is just too much too do and too little energy left at the end of the day. And, then there are days like today. Today was a closing day (that's normally a good thing). Today's closing was one issue after another all the way to the extended closing hour.

The lender had issues, the buyer had issues, the selling agent had issues and everything looked like it was bound to fall apart at the end. There were hours of phone calls, documents were sent back and forth and back and forth and favors were called in from all quarters and finally got it to the closing table. At the end, I was irritated and not in a mood to blog good things about real estate.

I sat at my computer fully able to spit out a nasty rant about people and circumstances that made my life difficult today, and it would have been a barn burner. And then, I had an aha moment. Rather than rant, why don't I write a post about something positive, something fun, something encouraging? After I wrote my positive post, I felt positive. The people who made my day complicated were no longer a thought. Would I want to jump right back into a deal with them? Not on a bet, but they don't control my mood. I do.

The next time you're tempted to write a rant, write an encouraging post. It will encourage others and it might just lift your day. It might take every ounce of your fiber to keep it upbeat, but when you're done, you'll feel better and you may even inspire someone else.

Shhhhh.......

I recall a rant or two from your blog.

My rant was a local agent who posted a rag demeaning Buyer's Agents and calling us unethical.

Finny thing, AR featured her crap but not mine.  MMMMMMMM

Too funny, Lenn. I've done my share, but I'm turning over a new leaf.  Of course, if you turn the leaf over twice, you're back to where you started. I'll be careful.

I'll admit it, I've written a rant or two. I feel much better after I do. Sometimes those rants turn into an entirely different post. As you said, that's probably a better way to go.

Mike Cooper - Well done.  I try not to write rants.  I go workout first, then start writing. Much better frame of mind.

Cheers,

Tom

Great advice! I agree with you. You do yourself more good with positive posting than from negative.

I've written a couple of rants....mine tend to be about lack of satisfaction with a product or company.  I think there is something to be said for letting others know when a company provides poor service and refuses to make good on a deal. There's something to be gained from interacting with others who have also had similar experiences. My rant about Sprint provided me with information from a commenter that eventually led to resolution of my issues.

Again....I agree with you. Spreading positive thoughts is a much healthier way to go!

Good morning Mike Cooper ,

I'm so glad Kathy Streib featured this post in her "Ah-ha" moments for the week!! Smart way to handle the negative..focus on the positive and don't let it affect your outlook on the day!

Mike, most of the time I control the mood but every once in awhile, like Roger, I have to rant. Enjoy your day!

Mike, I have done this often when the day's events reach an all-time level of frustration. I'd rather take the high road and allow it to be a teaching moment rather than a beat down! Even though there are days that have tested my limits...

This is great advice. I hope your recommendation will help reduce the blog rants we see on ActiveRain.

We all have moments when we're tempted to rant - you offer good advice for getting out of that mindset.

Something else I've found that works - go ahead and rant. Get it ALL out, including the words you wouldn't say for publication. Then when you're done, burn it. The anger just seems to float away with the smoke...

Mike -  it is best not to rant.  I know I have had the urge to do so but have managed to stop before.

Mike, I'm glad Kathy Streib featured this in the "Ah-Ha" post or I would have missed it. I will say, if anyone must rant, make it "Members Only". Your idea of writing something positive is much better.

I have a rule, don't push publish if I don't think it will help me get business. Now don't get me wrong, I ranted a lot before I learned better.

So true - we are the only ones in control of our mood.  I felt myself getting mighty cranky about something the other day and thought, "do I really want to spend all my energy on this?" and the answer was no. So I turned my attention to other things and now I can't even remember what was upsetting me.

I think that's a great solution. And if no ideas flow, better to not write something at all. It's like wanting to send that email blasting someone - better to wait or rework it in a constructive way. Although it can be tough, we are in control of how we respond in situations like you described - better to "let it go."
