Abner Doubleday is a name we all have been told is the young man who invented the game of baseball. However that is not true. Baseball began as a mixture of an English game called rounders and cricket. While no-one really knows who invented the game here are the facts. Alexander Joy Cartwright a member of the New York Knickerbocker Baseball Club actually codified a new set of rules that forms the basis for modern day baseball. He called for a diamond-shaped infield, foul lines and the three-strike rule. One more thing he abolished the rule of “tagging”. Tagging would be the practice of throwing the ball at the player. That would hurt… Now you know but the myth still resounds to this day.
