Thanks for stopping by and taking time out of your day to read my post.  My intent is to put a smile on your face.  Hopefully you’ll go away with some information you may have forgotten about or did not know.  Now sit back and enjoy.

Abner Doubleday is a name we all have been told is the young man who invented the game of baseball.  However that is not true.  Baseball began as a mixture of an English game called rounders and cricket.  While no-one really knows who invented the game here are the facts.  Alexander Joy Cartwright a member of the New York Knickerbocker Baseball Club actually codified a new set of rules that forms the basis for modern day baseball.  He called for a diamond-shaped infield, foul lines and the three-strike rule.  One more thing he abolished the rule of “tagging”.  Tagging would be the practice of throwing the ball at the player.  That would hurt…   Now you know but the myth still resounds to this day.

Remember to smile.  It will make people wonder what you have been up to.

Good morning James,

Used to love the "tagging" with my siblings!

And now we have instant replay to overturn everything; and I hate that.

Make yourself a great day.

I'm not a baseball fan but I'd like to see them go back to tagging. It would make it more interesting to watch!

There's a book called "Baseball in The Garden of Eden" that credits three men with inventing the game. Whoever it was, it will always be America's pastime.

I was reading Mental Floss the other day and it mentioned all sorts of people who were credited with discoveries that they did not discover, and here I thought Christopher Columbus was the only one . . .

Very interesting, James. I might have to research why Doubleday was given all the credit for inventing the game. Thanks for the story.

Very cool!  Who would have known that baseball had elements of "dodgeball" to it originally?
