Simple Question: Closing Gift to A Cooperating Agent

Have you ever given a closing gift to the agent working the other side of a transaction - for any reason - but I am thinking more specifically because they were freaking awesome to work with?

wrapped gift

I've sent thank you notes with a Starbucks Gift Card or a Movie Gift Gard to several agents most recently. They were truly professional and easy to work with. This is just a small gesture to let them know I appreciate their professionalism and enjoyed working with them.

I'm about to close THE ABSOLUTE SMOOTHEST, Drama-Free, Trouble-Free transaction in my 13 year real estate career.  This agent will absolutely get a very nice gift - I am just not sure what yet.  I may have to do a little detective work to make sure the gift is fitting for the person. I want it to be very special.

I have both given and received closing gifts. I have received gift cards for massages, plants, flowers and candy.

We frequently talk about closing gifts for clients, but what about the other agent?  Have you given or received gifts from the agent on the other side of the transaction?

I would very much like to hear your thoughts and experience on closing gifts from other agents.

Thank you for your comments.

Usually I just send a thank you note and follow up with a Christmas card. But on super great transactions I've sent Starbucks gift cards and on one occasion gave the agent a nice bottle of wine.

We have a very, very small market - wouldn't even begin to give gifts, thank yous are the usual route along with the "Oh Good, I get to do a deal with you again!" comment at the beginning of a transaction.

Not being an agent, but a Lender, I will step-back and not answer the direct questions, Kathleen Daniels ... but I do want to express my admiration for your actions and thoughts regarding this.  People who go above and beyond should know that it's appreciated.  Admire you for doing just that ...

I have given gifts to other agents but usually it's for something else, like referring a client to me or helping out with something. I've had buyer's agents give me cards and things and while it's nice, it's certainly not a requirement. One buyer's agent showed up at my office and handed me a $50 gift card to a restaurant, which was very unexpected. I usually give the gifts I receive to my support team. The guy with the $50 gift card a few years later expected priority during a cash multiple-offer situation, so they often come with strings attached, which is why I don't participate.

Elizabeth, we know that a true "gift" has no strings attached.  If we give expecting something in return ... then that is not a gift ... IMHO.  That is a secret bribe (LOL).

I have not given a closing gift to an agent but it would probably be a gift card like VISA that they can use anywhere they wish. It's the only one I buy! Friend of mine used it for another friend. Asked if I minded. It was hers to do with as she wished. Other agent would have to be pretty pretty pretty awesome because I usually get 'attitude"!

Hi Kathleen,

I would send nice email to the agents who are great to work with. And one to someone who was really nasty and snarky. :)

I've learned over the years to be careful what I say to nasty and snarky agents. It seems that people can do all kinds of crap in this industry and get away with it ... but if we say, or write something unbecoming, they can file a complaint and action taken against us. How screwed up is that Maria Gilda Racelis

I have never given nor received a gift to the other agent. This does however sound like a good thing when the other agent has been special!

Kathleen I thought I had commentated one this blog before.

I have not seen this done around here but think it is a very nice thing to do if one Realtor feels the other went above what was expected in the transaction.

I have been on both the giving and the receiving end of this is and it is very special and memorable.  If the experience is great for all parties, its a good idea to maintain positive relationships and show your gratitude!

Just like Deborah Pierce I have been the giver and the receiver and have to say the majority of times I have sent a gift card is to an agent who did a terrific job but the sale did not come together due to nothing that they had or had not done.

Very late to the party!  You are a truly professional agent for seeing the value in the other agent's cooperation and coordination of a seamless closing.  I've received closing gifts and then that same agent team sends out Christmas Ornaments annually, so I have about 6 of those. If I were a higher volume agent I think I would do it as well.

Kathleen, I have not given gifts before to other agents as I email them a thank you note for those who merit it.  This is something that I will reconsider after your thoughtful post!

Yes, worked with an agent who smoothed some issues out with the city on his clients behalf, benefiting my client immensely. Delivered a bottle of wine to him as a thank you.

I haven't received anything nor have I given anything. I've got a very unusual transaction that is 3+ months behind in closing and IF this one closes I plan on a giving the other agent a bottle of wine! She will deserve it.
