Who remembers: “Bewitched” “Facts of Life” “The Andy Griffith Show”?

After work I generally come home, make myself a delicious kale-fruit smoothie (which actually sounds worse than it tastes - lol) than sit down on the couch in front of the fireplace in my living room and scan the TV channels trying to find something interesting to watch on basic cable (which is a challenge).

Lately I find myself being drawn to shows on TV Land (which in my area of Grafton County, New Hampshire, is channel 41). For those of you who are familiar with the shows on TV Land you know they are usually reruns. So I started wondering why night after night I was being drawn back to channel 41 to watch shows like; “Bewitched,” the “Facts of Life,” “The Andy Griffith Show” etc.

As much as I love my current sitcoms that take away the stress from work with a good laugh by watching; “Modern Family,” “Big Bang,” “Mike and Molly,” “The Middles,” etc. it came to me, what I was craving and what I was getting from my time spent watching the shows on TV Land filled a much different void! In this day and age with so much violence and less and less manners being displayed it was refreshing to see it, even if it is just for 30 minutes at a time and even if it was only in my living room on my television. It was enjoyable to see people being polite and using manners and it was hopeful to see real families and friendships.

Nothing changes if nothing changes, and we can only control our self, so let’s treat others with the respect that we want to be treated with and pray they pay it forward and create a better life together.

Bobi, I understand your craving for decent television. I got sick of my cable bill, well actually satellite because I'm too far off the beaten track for cable so I became a cord cutter. One of my favorite things is to torture my husband by saying things like "I've never seen my Favorite Martian before." Although sometimes I look at the shows and just feel old...

Tamara Elliott-Derring I think, for me, it goes deeper than just craving better television (which we could use more to watch then the Kardashians don't get me wrong) but I am missing... I hate to say it but the sweet and simpler days when neighbors waved and said hello to each other and families stayed together and all sat down to dinner (at the table not in front of the television) and talked to each other instead of texting friends at the table. These old re-runs just remind me of how good times used to be and what it means to me be a family. I guess I was born in the wrong era. Now everyone is too busy to spend time with each other, some are too busy to even say thank you and that saddens me. I guess that’s the reason I enjoy watching these old shows, to see how polite everyone was. I like seeing a gentleman open a door for a lady and children helping their parents around the house and even using words like yes please, as it’s a rarity now days.
