I write a monthly newsletter which I distribute to my farm area, FSBOs, expireds, etc. I try to be organized about it, i.e. I try to get ideas for the newsletter during the month so that at month-end, I'm not stymied with writers' block. This month is better than most, because I actually have 2 or 3 article ideas, instead of my usual panic. I considered subscribing to services that'd either sell me the newsletter, personalized with my photo & contact info; or to services like pages.com that will sell me copyright-free articles for use in my own newsletter. However, I've found that I'd rather have my own freedom of expression, and write whatever I deem relevant to my readers.
Since I've been doing this, I've refined the look & content of the newsletter & have found that I actually have a following! Slowly, the humble newsletter has performed as intended--given me an innocuous, unique marketing tool that's relatively easy to develop, print & distribute. I've had neighbors actually meet me at the door to get it (I strive to distribute the newsletter in person, ideally on Sunday afternoons). I want to see & be seen by the recipients!
So, what do I write about? Pretty much anything. I always write about at least one or two local & relevant realty topics (Price to Sell; Short Sales); I'll provide personal success info (Dalia just listed...Dalia just sold); I've recommended books, provided information on blood & organ donations, scrapbooking, benefits of yogurt, etc. Readers have learned about upcoming community events & read inspirational quotes. The one thing you won't see in my newsletter will be recipes...hate to cook & refuse to even consider including recipes.
Although the letter takes a little time, I consider it a success (for me). I've gotten 2 listings (both sold & closed) & some listing appointments as a result of the newsletter. Maybe you have something you do or give out that has worked for you. Whatever it is, keep at it!
