Don't Be Afraid to Ask

A client pointed me toward statistics about her property on a real estate website that a fair amount of buyers and sellers visit. I don’t pay for a presence on that website but I was still surprised that when I clicked on my name there, it had no stats, other than the information I had entered about myself.

No ratings? No feedback? Well, why should there have been? I don’t pay for a presence there but more importantly, I’d never asked for it.

So I composed a simple email and asked some trusted clients to visit the site and give their honest opinions. I also gave them a pass if they didn’t want to participate or they could feel free to just email me directly if they wanted to share anything that way. Then I moved on with my day.

My request got buried in my thoughts as the day progressed as many do, with lots of emails, appointments, phone calls, and follow ups. It wasn’t until the next morning, as I sat down to start my day, that I saw the first email, and then another, and then another. Honest compliments about strengths I had displayed and skills I’d used to help my clients were there, in print. Excellent information for prospective clients so they could read the words of others, but also, this simple exercise had just about moved me to tears with some of the thoughtfulness in the words I read. They wrote about me in the same way that I think about each of them.

My take away? Ask for feedback. And yes, referrals always, but for today, ask for feedback. There might be some things in there you need to work on but you’ll probably get some kindness sent right back in your direction. You never know when those words might be exactly what the doctor ordered!
