Home Sellers! What do buyers first see when they ring your Door Bell ?

Reblogger Jeff Dowler, CRS

First impressions of a house are critical, and while that might begin as you drive up, those seconds at the front door while you are waiting to enter can say alot about a home.

Sellers should think about what buyers and agents see when they arrive at the front door, especially if the front door lock doesn't work well and more time is spent looking around the front entry while the agent struggles with the lock (and what message does THAT send?!).

It is        important to create a great first impression when you are selling your home.

Buyers usally spend a few  minutes at the door when the agent either rings the door bell or opens the lock box. In the mean time the buyers look around them. Do they see cobwebs, chipped paint , worn out furniture or toys?

Based on what they see they form an opinion of what the inside of the house will be like.

If you are selling your home here are few tips that will help make a great first impression.

1. Paint the front door to give an impression of a well maintained house. If it does not need new paint atleast make sure it is clean.Upgrade the door if necessary.

2. Remove cobwebs from the porch .

3. If you have furniture on the porch and it is worn out , remove it . Otherwise do what it takes to make it look nice by washing, painting ,staining or adding new cushions.

4. Buy a new door mat.

5. Replace hardware on the door if it looks old or polish it.

6.  Check to see if  the door bell works.

7 . Replace exterior  light bulbs if they need to be replaced and turn the lights on just  before it gets dark. Add exterior lighing if you do not have it.

8. Place two potted plants with seasonal flowers on either side of the door. Use nice containers.

9. Wash the porch.

10.Remove toys from the porch.

It really is, and sometimes that impression is not a good one. The door that does not work drives me nuts when showing homes

Curb appeal, including the front door, is a big deal. It can say alot about what's behind that door! I think it is often overlooked
